Segment about Street Racing on Dateline NBC

Well tonight(friday) on Dateline NBC, there was a thing about street racing and how dangerous it is. They interviewed a few people, and eventually the guy interviewing talked about "getting sideways" and the guy said its actually a racing techniqe etc... and later talked about long drift runs. If I remember right the guy then said, "This getting sideways still is not as dangerous as the people going down the highways at excess of 120 mph." So anyway, if anyone else watched this post your opinion about this, and how you think the media may start giving drifting a bad name, and how they blow certain things out of proportion.


Also, I recorded it, so I may upload it somewhere so people who missed it can see it.

i have a question why is it that the guy that lives with his mother
and also owns a crx so famous he came on mtv "im a streetracer"
and was in the back ground of ''the fast and the furious'' scene where the race ends and the white guy blows his engine an the ''scientist'' is checking out the engine.

it did make drifting look like a joke and look like some dumb fad but i don't think that report accuratly portrayed drifting. those guys seemed like jack-asses. only my 2cents though

Haha I didnt know that, I never noticed him in Fast and Furious, and I never got to watch that im a street racer thing. Ah well, I just think they portrayed drifting badly, but they didnt get into it too much so maybe people didnt really notice it.

I didn't see the news piece however I think it's normal for the reporters to spin things or sensationalize stories so that the viewers response is always "wow". Just watch the news when they report on bad weather they always remove the windscreen that covers the mics so that now it sounds really windy when in fact it may not be but it sure will sond like it...

This time the reporters didnt have to do anything to make drifting look dumb. The people they interviewed (both in person and driving) did it all for them. Seriously, that kid they interviewed (same one from the MTV show) needs to keep his mouth shut. Good job making us all look like a bunch of idiots that make bad choices. Talking about his "80 car drifting mission through mountain roads" like hes cool or something. Then they showed a bunch of FF's gripping through the mountain and top it off with people spinning out every time they kick it out. Didnt see one good drift. Lame. Then every once in a while they mix it up with some wanna-be freeway racing with idiots cutting people off almost causing accidents and the people recording cheering it on. RETARDED!!!

No average normal person could understand the concept of drifting. People STILL ask me, after i am done explaining what drifting is, "But if its slower than normal track driving, whats the point?" Those are "Motorsports Enthusiasts". HA. Most people see it as dangerous out of control spinning with no real purpose.

Its like porn. Do porn actors do anything to help procreate the human species? No, the fcuk for the fun of it. We drive for the fun of it, regardless of lap time.

As for being dangerous. When i first started getting rides from drivers that were a LOT better than me, i would have this sense of "Oh fcuk!". Now that my skill is at a higher level, getting the car sideways, holding it, throttle, line, angle etc is all in slow-mo. I know it sounds corny but its like those movies (Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back does a good portayal) where a bangin hot chick walks in and there is music, wind, slow-mo, good lighting, etc... Thats what drifting has become. I just watched "Trainspotting" about Heroin addiction and life and shiet. Drifting is heroin.

Im just disgusted about the fact that they put street racing and drifting on the same show! Everyone knows about street racing now, and how much it has sold out to hollywood and other venues but to compare it or to even mention it next to street racing is pretty sad. Drifting is a technique were as street racing is a illegal sport. Oh well, we live in a society that just tells us that the right things are wrong and the wrong things are right!

So street drifting isn't dangerous or illegal?

I think there should be some reprocussions for doing it in a populated area. WHat i don't like is the cops who would hassle people for going far away to remote locations and drifting where they can't harm anyone and no one is woken up at 3 am by tires and exhaust. 'Course if you go far enough away, no one WILL be bothered!

Drifting in desolate areas/with spotters should not be punished. Especially in areas where tracks are few and far between, like SoCal. (The closest track to me is Buttonwillow, 250 miles away. There are also events in Vegas, 297 miles away. I've driven to both, but it's a biatch.)

you know, me and my friend use to race alot, and i now that i look back on it, i think it is one of the smartist things i did with that GTI. My buds and i would always go to a back road, about 5 miles from houses or a busy street, and would race there. I dont see what i did as stupid at all. But cops hated it. If you got cought there, not even racing there, cops would give you horrible tickets like $75 parking tickets for not pulling far enough off of the road. And now i am starting to second guess becoming a police officer because i cant give someone a ticket for doing somthing that i did (and still do sometimes). If i pulled someeone over for doing 100+ mph, i dont think i could act all pissed. I would have to know whats under the hood, and what kinda of stuff he does with it. And now that i am gettting in to drifting, there is no way that i could give someoen a recloess driving ticket, when im prob. gunna go out later that night and go drifting
