Since the last Irwindale drift event is upon us I figure now would be a good time for a FBF with a side story on how the championship was almost lost. All throughout practice Daigo's car had a really bad misfire and trying to find the cause was one of the most stressful things to solve in a short time. We went from swapping plugs, coils fuel pumps, changing spark gaps to you name it, nothing worked to the point we had to go into qualifying without even finding the problem. After Robbie made his first qualifying run, my right hand man, Peter Yeung said they had problems with the HKS ignition box on a previous car so as a last ditch effort we decided to swap it out before Daigo's qualifying run. The problem was, we didn't have a spare and the only working one we knew of was on Robbie Nishida's SC300 who just finished his first qualifying run. To make matters worse, the connectors for the HKS ignition boxes were completely different between the two cars so it wasn't as easy as plugging a cellphone into an outlet. It would need to be completely rewired. I asked Robbie if we can borrow it for Daigo's run he was quick to say yes to help out his buddy. I jumped in and started cutting wires yet was careful enough to know that Robbie had to do one more qualifying run and needed the box reinstalled in the next few minutes. Keep in mind, this box wasn't just cutting two wires and install it. It was about nine wires and each were specific to where they went and both cars were wired different…by the way, did I mention I am color blind? Cutting wires when your color blind is like being a blind surgeon yet I was able to at least cut the wires at an uneven enough lengths that they would only line up one way. The trick was to do the same on the other car. In the end, for all the qualifying runs this box went from Robbie's car to Daigo's car, back into Robbie's then back to Daigo's eventually being permanently put back into Robbie's car roughly all within minutes of each runs.
