SCCA SPEED GT JOINS RACING LINEUP FOR
2007 TOYOTA GRAND PRIX OF LONG BEACH
LONG BEACH, Calif. (Nov. 8, 2006) - With the addition of the SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge GT Championship to its weekend lineup, race fans attending the 33rd Annual Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, April 13-15, 2007, will again enjoy the high-speed action of SIX big races.
The SCCA SPEED GT joins the Bridgestone Presents the Champ Car World Series Powered by Ford (featuring the sleek new Panoz DP01 chassis), American Le Mans Series, 31st Annual Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race, EZ Lube Team Drift Challenge and the Cooper Tires Presents the Champ Car Atlantic Championship Powered by Mazda.
The SCCA SPEED GT, which will run on Sunday afternoon, April 15, as the climax to weekend activities, made its Long Beach debut last year on the famed 1.968-mile, 11-turn seaside circuit, with Canada's Ron Fellows scoring an exciting win in his Cadillac, passing Michael McCann two corners from the finish and holding on to take the checkered flag.
"The SPEED World Challenge GT proved a highly competitive and popular addition last year," said Jim Michaelian, CEO of the Grand Prix Association of Long Beach. "We're glad to have them back as the final segment of what is sure to be a fabulous weekend of racing."
Gaining rapidly in popularity, the SCCA SPEED GT features a wide variety of racing marques and powerplants, including the Chevrolet Corvette, Porsche 911, Aston Martin DB9, Cadillac CTS-V and Dodge Viper, among others.
"We're excited to again be a part of one of the biggest racing events in North America in 2007," SCCA President and CEO Jim Julow said. "Our brand of racing utilizing recognizable, production-based cars is geared not just toward race fans, but automobile fans, and we're certain that the series will again be a favorite for fans at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach."
In the series' recently completed 2006 season, Porsche won the Manufacturer's Cup Presented by RACER Magazine by just three points over Dodge, while rookie Lawson Aschenbach of Gaithersburg, Md., won the driving championship and Piloti Rookie of the Year honors driving his AXA Financial Porsche 911 GT3.
Aschenbach scored top-10 finishes in every race to win the title, outdistancing Lou Gigliotti, Andy Pilgrim, Ricardo Imery and Tommy Archer.
