DAVID BRIGGS, XDC Round #1 Winner
David Briggs becomes the winner of XDC Round One at Irwindale
March 22, 2010 (Irwindale, Calif.) – A talented field of aspiring drifters from throughout the country entered Toyota Speedway at Irwindale on Saturday aiming to become the winner of the first ever Xtreme Drift Circuit event. In the end, it was Canadian David Briggs who would take home the top spot in front of several thousand fans on the hallowed grounds of the ‘House of Drift’.
After qualifying second in top-16 qualifying, Briggs, driving a Nissan S14, survived a One More Time against James Evans in the top-16, defeated Mike Pollard in the top-8, and then defeated Jeff Jones in the Final Four to go against Quoc Ly and his Nissan S13 in the final. Ly ‘s path to the final saw him defeat Lance Feliciano, Forrest Wang, and then Brian Peter to before he matched up with Briggs. In the final, Ly made a correction while chasing that would ultimately prove the difference, opening the door for Briggs to take the victory.
In an exciting battle for the final podium spot, Jones and his Nissan S13 was matched against the V8-powered Mazda RX-7 of Peter had a decided advantage after the first run, where he shadowed Jones throughout the course, but it was all for naught as his Mazda met the wall in the inner oval while leading.
As part of the overall prize package, Briggs was awarded a cash prize of $3000, Ly was awarded $2000, Jones $1000, and Peter $500, while the top-three were awarded tools packages from Genius Tools. Ly also earned a $100 contingency award from ACT Clutches.
The end result was an event that raised the bar of competition for the aspiring drifters of North America, with some the best rising talent taking the fight to several veteran drivers. The overall event format, which featured the largest car show seen in years at Irwindale, proved a successful launch for the 2010 XDC Series, with the huge crowd turnout far exceeding any Pro-Am event yet.
XDC will be back in action at second event of the 2010 season, May 21-22 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in Las Vegas, Nevada.
