MONTEREY, Calif. (April 8, 2004) - The fastest growing form of motorsport
meets one of the world's most famous racing venues when the $10,000
winner-take-all International Drifting Shoot-Out takes the stage as part of
the Road & Track U.S. Sports Car Invitational, April 30 - May 2, at Mazda
Raceway Laguna Seca.
Drifting involves drivers intentionally putting their cars into a controlled
slide (or drift) at high speed through a marked course. Drivers are judged
on execution and style, as well as speed through the corners.
Part of the Road & Track magazine-sponsored U.S. Sports Car Invitational,
the International Drifting Shoot-Out is featuring some of the sports top
drifters competing for the largest purse - $10,000 - in the history of the
sport in the U.S. The competitors will stage on the front straight, then
drift through Turn 2 (Andretti Hairpin) and Turn 3.
The stellar line-up of drivers competing in the event is being released next
week.
The International Drifting Shoot-Out, sponsored by Mazda and Yokohama Tire
Corporation, is taking place on the afternoons of Friday, April 30 and
Saturday, May 1. The weekend's schedule also includes races featuring
Historic Stock Cars, Formula Ford Zetec Championship, Mazdaspeed Miata Cup
and Porsche Club of America.
In addition to the on-track action, a Drifting Participant Party is taking
place at Club Octane in Downtown Monterey on Friday night. The party is
free for all and includes drifting drivers, car displays, live entertainment
and food and drink specials.
