  • Drifting a fastback S13

I found these great place to practice, so I spent the whole last night drifting, or at least trying. Here's the problem. I am speeding on 3rd gear towards the corner about 70mph. I give the car a little braking as I turn to the outside of the corner, which by the way is like a 90 degree long turn. Then I use the faint to turn in as I heel and toe and dowshift to 2nd. The rear starts slidding due to braking. Now when this happens I dont know what else to do. I try countersteering and giving the car a little gas but it just fishtails nasty. Any suggestions would be really helpfull.
    Thanx

So let me get this straight, lets say your taking a left corner. You faint right, turn decently hard left as your feathering the gas. Then the car comes back to the right or the front starts to go to the outside corner.

If this is so, your countering to much, might try to let your car slide more with less counter and a little more gas. If its a big area or turn, experiment more with the throttle and keep at it thats really the biggest thing.

how far away are you starting your feint? if its too far i would try starting the feint closer to the corner. also, i would try to just heel-toe downshift w/o the feint, and use lots of gas once the backend comes out, to see how the car reacts to that...

im not trying to be your dad, but first of all, save it for the track. but if you absolutely have to, at least start off with some low speed stuff. it sounds to me from your description of whats happening, that you really cant control the car yet. if you dont know why you cant drift at 70, try at 30. when you master that, try 40, 50, 60, THEN 70.

i can tell you i have experience from drift day 4, 5, 8, 10, the first drift showoff, and i still dont feel comfortable going over 60 for drifts. i'm not saying im koguchi or anything. not at the least. but i have drifted enough to know my limits. just please try slower first. i dont know you or your skill level, only you do. so im not trying to tell you what to do. only suggest and recommend. just try getting a better feel for the car and how it behaives. once it is natural to you, then increase speed.

*edit*: oh yeah, you DO have a limited slip, right?

are you sideways before the corner? if not, do so. Plus be careful. My friend just hit a curb drifting tonight, no major damage, but was kind of funny.

                Rain Drift

Nope I dont have an LSD , bone stock except custom 2.5" exhaust and Air intake, plus Strut Tower bars.I 'll take your advice and start slower . I was trying it about three days ago in the rain and since it's slower It has helped me a lot with car control under skidding. And I wish we'd have a track down here at Miami where we could pratice. If you know of anything LMK.
                Thanx a lot

i dont have an lsd either, and she goes sideways pretty easily.....you said you have strut bars, so another good mod would springs and struts, or coilovers if you rich. stiff suspension really helps

Yeah my next mods are Wheels and tires, then VLSD, and Tein HE.
I also want to get the tanabe Swaybars, but I want to get better without installing the coilovers or sway bars yet.
                    Thanx

                        $$$

I'm poor too man. Most of the money I earn dissapears in school and clubs. But the VLSD go for $300 plus shipping everywhere. If you are in Cali Jspec installs them for $450. Now the coilovers is a whole different story. They go for $1300 Damn!!! Anyways I've heard they are worth it. I've been meaning to ask what would be the best wheel-tire size for the S13 to go drifting?
                        Thanx

sounds like inexperience and non-LSD to me. I drove a freinds S13 with no LSD, I got the tail to start sliding, rolled into the gas like I would my AE86, instant understeer.
