I am both a pro racer and drifter. I am the factory driver for Mazda in Formula D, Drift Showoff and US Drift. I have also raced indycars, sports cars, and stock cars. I think I just might be a bit of an authority on the subject. I have also been a racing instructor for 8 years, and a drift instructor for 1 year. Yes even the Drift King would agree. Also a Pro racer.

I have a question if you enter a turn at a certain speed, maintaining exit at a that speed or higher isn't that the fastest way of taking a corner? Isn't that the point in drifting, show or race? Also if you take the inside part of the corner faster?
Also aren't American roads different from japanese roads? Kilometers per hour and Miles per hour? Size of the roads?
Have anyone seen or been in a Mountain Drift Race in Japan with Japanese kids? These guys are talented, dedicated and love the sport. You would be amaze at what feats they can do.
Why would grip be faster? Just because are car is sideways. In race drifting you point your car towards the exit of the turn to execute it correctly or you'll be sliding in the wall.
I don't believe drifting was meant for 210 mph capable fiberglass constructed Indy cars that stick to the ground like glue. Drifting is for regular cars for regular guys. How many tracks have 5 consecutive tight hairpins ending with a 10% drop straightway into another set of hairpins.
Grip racing is used base on the fact that your is firmly on the ground and you follow a race line. In Drifting you could be out of control and follow a line maybe even faster than the traditional line because they don't fall under the normal conditions of racing.
I'm maybe wrong but, I grew up in Japan and Japanese drifting I loved it even before it became popular in the States. When me and my friends first heard of it becoming popular in the States we sighed. Because once it becomes mainstream it'll be used, bashed, and exploited. Heardly anybody truly lives the life of a true Drifter because you never experiecened it beyond the Fast and Furious lifestyle, Initial D animes and english subtitled Options video. I'm not saying that kids can't experience it in the States but to do so you need to respect it. Me and my friends don't see it as a motorsport we live it, breathe it and dream it. Its our religion.
I don't live in Japan and have never been there, except for a couple of hours in transit flights! hahahaha
It's true that drifting is more for the regular guys with regular income and some basic skills. from there, they'll polish those skills and be better.
Here in Malaysia, there's a lot of grip events but almost no drift event at all. Fear not, we always make our own drift event. give us an open parking lot or some wide open spaces and we'll carve out our own drift circuit! hahahaha... for more fun, we'll be drifting up-hill and downhill after midnite!
Personally, I haven't been drifting for a long time. and I'm no pro. but to me and my buddies, drifting is all about having fun. who can hold the longest sideway, double shift-lock and fishtailing down the straights.
Agree Drifting is all about fun but NOT losing control. Drifting is maintaining control just over the edge of losing it.
It is a lifestyle but then again so is everything else that anyone else does. Skateboarding is a lifestyle, needleworking is a lifestyle and so is international chess playing. Different lifestyle for different people. Any activity someone does had a lifestyle attached to it.
Also you cant bag on Initial D and english dubbed Option videos. For most people they are what sparked interest in this growing sport. Not everyone got to grow up in Japan and experience Drifting first hand. But that doesn't mean they aren't living the life of a true Drifter. Drifting is in your heart not in the area where you reside. You can live it, breathe it and dream it whether you are in Japan or Zimbabwe or Cowpatty Oregon. Makes no difference.
Drifters live in the slide, the real world is just background noise.
(CrazyHawaiian) that is sweet that you drift the camaro i used to have one and it was a boat lol but the raw V8 power is they best i have an FC now and it's fun and anyone that says that drift is faster guess what your wrong if you look closely at the drift king his not drifting in the best motoring videos it's more like a control slide i seen people drift up close in the mountains and it's just stupid and dangerous because the grip drivers come up to there bumper right away because drift is slow but fun to do just for fun Justin ^ was with me when this dumb kid was braking during the turns and guess what we came around the turn and he lost it a slid right into a wall and *Censored**Censored**Censored**Censored*ed up his subaru and all you people that watch initial D and say wow he's going 140 guess what that is Kph it's like going 88mph big deal and when he caught the GRT in the high speed turn he was only going about 110kph that is like 61mph most people i know can keep an over 65mph dowhill speed some even faster and the reason the GTR lost because hi's line taking sucked and when he realized it at the last moment and tried to take a better like takumi already saw his mistake and took the opportunity and his brakes and tires wearing out must to have been stock tires and maybe autozone brakes LOL and the way bunta tuned the 86 he probable had some crazy tires on the 86 that not even the reagular street racers could get.
Where did you see these drifters at? Also, 140kph is fast going down small Japanese mountain roads. If you go down a mountain straight away mountain road that was meant for 15-30 kph driving, these turns will come on you quick and it is a big deal. Have you ever seen drifters drift the Japanese backroads? the roads are a little more wider than a Hachi-roku. Going 80 mph in a curvy road where it was meant to be drivin at 15 mph takes skill. The mountain and backroads roads here in Okinawa, Japan are small because of lack of space unlike the US and are meant to be driven slow so the turns in roads are more tighter than in the states.

as with everything else i'm with ghost you don't have to live in japan to love drifting although i hear where your comming from, america has a habit of corrupting damn near anything good.
as for drifting behind faster then grip... ehhh i don't know enough to make a decent arguement but if you ask me i'd say a straight line would always be faster

come one now i seen those vid of those drifters and all they do is smoke tires on the little *Censored**Censored**Censored* road yes they do have skill to drift but they would get there *Censored**Censored**Censored* handed to them by a grip driver there not even going fast maybe 30 35 mph were i live we have a very technical road and Drift is just for show some of the grip drivers will make you spit your food back out and wish you never got in that car are road is 13.5 miles of turns and some drivers can keep a speed of 80mph+ now that is real skill
