Thanks, again, for the advice guys. As fate would have it, another S13 as appeared for sale. It's a Manual but has done 98,000 miles as opposed to the 58,000 miles of the auto. It's a real tough call. I'll test drive the auto today and if I can't get on with it, I'll take a look at the manual.

    So it's a choice:

    High miler Manual

    or

    Low miler Auto.

    ARGHHHH!!!

Trouble is, good mileage, good condition S13's, in the right colour, come up so rarely that I think I'll take it anyway. But not sure it's good car-buyer ettiquette to try and drift a car on your first test drive with the owner in the passenger seat !!
          youre very welcome!

it is very hard to find good s13 chassis in the states with good miles....took me awile, and i still had to get one that had 135k milage....thats ok though.

when i was test driving my 240 (will soon be RPS13 180sx) i went crazy with it in a parking lot....like mad sideways and smokage. the guy actually thought it was tight...so you should ask when testing a car, specially if you are buying it for drift purposes!!

Well I checked out the Auto this afternoon but didn't buy it. The condition was very good and the mileage low (57,000) but the auto just didn't feel right. When the car was in drive and I was just bumbling along a slow road, the auto box kept shifting down to 2nd, opening the turbo at 3000revs and then changing up as soon as the turbo kicked in.

So basically, I was driving at a consistent speed for a normal road with traffic on it and the box just kept shifting and bringing the turbo in and out!! Very wierd feeling not to be in control of the box.

Gonna look at a 100,000 miler S13 tommorow that has just had a new cambelt and valves. Hoping this won't be too worn out! ANy of you guys heard of S13's becoming money pits at the 100,000 mile mark?

My S13 ran fine until 190k miles when it blew. are you talking miles or km? i noticed your in the uk but i did so just now. mine and steve's auto experience was with the KA24, not as powerful as the SR20turbo but power comes on alot more evenly, i think bigger displacement engines work better for automatic transmission. i know Crazyhawaiian has drifted his camaro with the big v8 and auto tranny pretty successfuly.

I cant say much about the SR20, but i assume its similar, but the KAs are good motors and the S13s will last long after 100 thousand miles.

my 240 went to about 137k miles before i ran into some problems...it started out with my power window stopping, then when i took it to the shop, they told me i needed new brakes. so i got new brakes. then when i got my car back, like 2 days later my act clutch snapped in half. the clutch plate actually shattered. took it back to that shop and told them to fix it. had more clutch problems. then once they got that fixed, they told me my oil was bad, and i was like "wtf, i just changed it like 2 weeks ago" and so i had them change it again. well they drained it, but never put more in. a week later, it started knocking. three days after the knock started, it took the rod from piston 1 and blew a 3" diameter whole in the side of my block. that was the end of the ka24de in my 91 240sx......

so now im getting ready to do an sr20det swap, and convert just about everything on the car to JDM awsomeness

Yeah, I'm talking Miles here not KM. We don't understand KM over here in the UK!!

All the UK S13's are the CA18DET. I think that the SR20 was a US and Australian release only.

Going to look at a S13 this morning that has done 100,000 miles. THe average driver does about 12,000 miles a year so I guess I'll get a bout two years drive out of it before it starts to develop any serious problems from engine wear.

we never got the sr20.....just the ka24e and ka24de...ones sohc and the other is dohc.... i guess only japan and maybe australia got the PS13 K's (P is for sr20de and the K is for turbo). we never got any turbo silvia chassis...its sad really....at least in europe you guys got to keep the silvia name....we only have 240sx...which i think is like 10 times more *Censored**Censored**Censored*...lol

Well as far as I know, the S13's in the UK are all called the 200sx and run the CA18DET engine. There is also a 240sx which seems to be very rare and possibly an import.

The S14 here is called the 200sx Touring and runs a 2litre engine, possible the SR20? The body shape of the S14 is quite different and not (in my opinion) as attractive.

The Silvia name in the UK I've only seen on the old S12's, I think that the Silvia name might still be used in Europe and Japan. I beleive that what we call the 200sx (S13) here in the UK is what the Japanese would call the 180SX (S13). The only reference I've ever seen to the Silvia name apart from on the S12's is for the Sil-Eighty model which appears to be some sort of S13 with an S12 front on it or something.

                        All very confusing.

Incidently, regarding this post, I have agreed a sale on the auto S13 CA18DET. I saw a manual but it was falling apart. Should soon be drifting and powersliding with the rest of ya!!

                        Cheers

Well, I bought the auto S13 CA18DET yesterday and have already had the back end out on a few occasions while I adjust to the balance and weight of the car. I'm very pleased with it and the only gripe about having an auto over a manual is the delay between putting my foot down and the engine responding. Other than that ROCK ON!!

Thanks for all your advice, especially from the auto owners who confirmed that driving an auto is not just for old people!

Now I'm just gonna go and find myself the perfect roundabout.......

                          Cheers.
