How does D1 define street legal?

In another thread (the GTO thread), it was mentioned that D1 only allows street legal cars to compete. My question was, how do they define street legal? Does anyone know? Street legal in Japan? If so, what are the limits of the modifications you can do and still be considered street legal? Cuz I'm sure alot of us that are building our own cars would want to know what the limits are in case our dreams come true. I can honestly say the types of mods I've seen done to D1 cars are not street legal where I come from (these would be considered track cars). Just wondering if anyone knows ... thanks ...

D1 Rules and Regulations


Safety Modifications and Guidelines:


Anything designed to enchance the safety of the vehicle in a collision must be retained (the sole exceptions are air bags and/or factory collision reinforcement bars, which may be removed.).
Each car must be equipped with a six-point or better roll cage.
Roll cage must be welded or securely bolted and anchored. If roll cage is bolted then its must be securely reinforced with an anchor plate and backing plate sandwich on each side of the floor pan.
Roll cage may be placed in front or through the dashboard.
Roll cage must include side impact bars both driver and passenger side.
Roll cage tubing must be at a minimum of 1.75 inches in diameter
Drivers seat must be equipped with a four-point or better racing type safety harness of nylon web, at least 3 inches in diameter, with a metal buckle. Shoulder harness must be an H type not Y type harness. Safety Harness must be securely bolted to the frame.
4WD cars are not permitted.
All cars must be registered as street legal and must have valid license plate.
Towing hook must be installed.
Passenger seat must be securely installed / bolted and functional.
Drivers must be fitted with Snell Foundation (SA) approved safety helmets with 1995 Snell Foundation (95SA) or later safety sticker of approval displayed inside; head and neck restraints systems are optional and must also be Snell Foundation (SA) approved. Face shields are strongly recommended.
Drivers must wear driving suits made of approved fire resistance material (Nomex, Kynol, etc.) in single or double layers. Socks and full length underwear must also be fire resistance.
Drivers must wear fire resistance gloves with no holes composed of Nomex or leather. Shoes must be of fire resistant materials or leather on top. Racing shoes are strongly recommended.
Catch tanks must be securely fastened. Radiator catch tanks must have a minimum capacity of 1 qt. each. Oil catch tanks may also be installed on engine oil breathers where practical. NO FLUID LEAKS OF ANY KIND WILL BE TOLERATED.
All cars must be equipped with at least a 2 lb. 10 BC fire extinguisher securely mounted in the cockpit, easily accessible by the driver. An onboard halon type fire system is strongly recommended.
Master electrical cut-off switches are highly recommended and should clearly be marked if fitted outside the vehicle.
Fuel cells are strongly recommended. The location of the fuel cell must be completely isolated from the cockpit with steel or aluminum firewall.
Fuel filler caps must be securely fastened so as not to open on impact.
Refueling must be conducted with at least two mechanics. During refueling one other mechanic must attend with fire extinguisher in hand. The refueling mechanic must wear fire retardant/proof suit and helmet with shield.
All hoods and deck lids must be adequately and securely fastened.
All drain plugs must be securely fastened.
Batteries must be securely fastened down, positive terminals well insulated and if located in the cockpit must be covered or have leak proof caps.
All cars must have at least one working rear brake light.
All cars must have working head lights and rear brake lights.
Brake systems including brakes, lines, fluid and pedals must be in good shape and working condition. Dual master cylinders are recommended.


Authorized Modifications:


Each car must maintain the OEM unibody.
OEM front windshield glass must be maintained.
Decals, other than D1 official controlled decals, on the front windshield and side windows are not permitted. The window space mentioned here must be controlled only by D1 officials.
Every car must maintain a complete exhaust system with a factory or aftermarket catalytic converter.
Any tires that are within public accessibility may be used. No slick or race compound tires are permitted.
The rear seats, air-conditioning, radio, wiper blades may be removed.
Aftermarket body panels, bumper covers and wings are permitted
Seam welding the unibody is permitted.
Suspension upgrades are open.
Factory wheels may be replaced with aftermarket wheels.
Any grade of automotive gasoline may be used for fuel.
Engines are open for modification.

It says all vehichles must be registered and street legal. But hows that going to work now that they are holding a d1 in america. will it have to be registered in japan? or anywere? i know the last D1 wasnt held for points, but they had american 240s there and im sure a few were running sr20s, which would not be legal technically speaking.

I supose they havent hamered it out yet.

Engine Swaps Are Legal!!

Engine Swaps are LEGAL!!!!
But there are guidelines you will have to follow..
The engine can't be older than your cars model year.
It must retain all smog equipement.You will have to get it inspected and have a receipt for the engine..Also a Smog Cert.

As for D1 Your questions.. already answered..
