Are you going to go KA-T? If not consider rebuilding the bottom end, then putting a DE head on there will get you at least 11.1:1 compression ratio. Ask SMC for details he knows that stuff.

yea, if you have the time and some money, some internal work like the E pistons into the DE, a little work with the head, and altima piston rings are a good addition to the DE engine and will give it some power for pretty cheap. Add an intake, exhaust and exhaust manifold, some cams and you could be looking at 190+ whp, with some tuning of course.

Everyones going SR,why not CA? I'm sure you have your reasons for the KA,but for a little more you get more hp to play with.

I beleive becuase the CA can't hold as much boost and horsepower as the SR. Anyone correct me if im wrong.

actually, the CA can push more boost because of the pistons and the internals. the fact that it is cast iron also helps. the way the CA is built it is like a mini RB. it has the same design pistons and everything as the RB26DETT GT-R motors do. the only problem with the CA18DET is that it can have trouble at higher altitudes. here in CO CA chokes out and isnt as good, so thats why im putting in an SR20 rather than the CA18.....but in texas that shouldnt be a problem.

I feel your pain man. As you know my DOHC just went. Unlike you i think i am going to get me a SR20.

It wont be for a while though. Hopefuly yours will be running soon.

But yeah like weaponX and raging panda said, if you want to keep it naturally aspirated (and theres some advantages to that) Your current pistons in a DOHC motor can produce some crazy compression. the oldest KA24E will net you 11.7 to 1 and the lower compression from the late 89 and 90 will give you 11.1:1 you may also want to look into maybe shaving or whatever it is they do to your current pistons to reduce the compression, if you just want to run mild compression not crazy compression 10:1 or something like that. I believe the DOHC S13 motors all had 9.1:1 stock, (though part of me wants to say 9.6:1, ill have to look it up)

190 whp is really possible, especialy using a big 3 inch exhaust designed for a turbo. And though i doubt anyone has done it yet, im sure 200+ is possible with a built NA high compression KA. let it breath, port everything and maybe pick out, or costomize camshafts for where you want power, i'd shoot for top end sence a high compression KA will have the bottom end pretty much covered.

Basicly you can trade off bottom end power that you gain with the high compression and thinks like underdrive pullies and removing accessories. Its all really theory right now though, i've not heard of anyone going that far with it. Something i would love to do once though.

However if you want to go to a turbo charger, thats also a good sugestion, Though personally (and everyone has a different opinion) most the KA turbo kits use turbos that i think are alittle to big. In my mind drifting would be easier with a responsive turbo and 250 whp or so, not a 400+ monster, i know the pros run them but they are pros for a reason.

Anyways man good luck with your build, looks like 2 and half of our S13s died this week. (steve says his is on the way out) And we lost a S14 too...

This is a dark week for the drifting.com community

i would liek to go NA just cause i want a reliable motor and the way i drive slapping boost would just kill another motor way to soon.

acctualy my mom wants me to sell it, but im not going to, fook that
shes being very difficult about it though, whining about this and that, she wants her car in the garage but my step dad wont move his wagoneer that he hasnt drivin in about 8 months, so my car has to go outside and well i dont think doing a motor build over the next liek month outside would work.... its all alot of drama so ill spare you

i had thought of the CA before but hadnt realy checked into it to much, will it swap in pretty easily?
and i had heard parts were pretty hard to source...any info on the CA would be appreciated if youve got it, and ill try to do some hw as well, ill keep progress posted
                      thanks

yea, N/A is cool, but nobody makes cheap parts, so its costly if you want more than about 190 whp. Turbo is cheaper, and that was the way i was going to go until i sold my S13. You can run a T25 on a KA, it ends up being to small in the top end, but your mid range is crazy, and it will make around 220 whp. With a T3 turbo you can push 250-275, and that is really all you need if you ask me, but if you want 300+ you go t3/t4 or bigger. The t3/t4 will not really lag, but it wont boost up quick like the smaller turbos. Basically, all you need is T3, manifold, 370cc SR injectors, Apexi SAFC or something to compensate for the bigger injectors, exhaust, intercooler + piping, custom downpipe and exhaust. bov and wastegate unless yours is internal. The NICO forums are really helpful and there are a ton of guy running 450+ whp on stock KA internals, so the engine is stout.

                          yes its entirely possible.

But as far as NA goes you can build a hell of alittle engine. After all the corrolla guys usualy dont run more then 160 whp, and thick do you think that power band is? 1.6 liters doesnt provide much torque. You have 2.4 liters to play with. Get your cars weight down, strip it until your pushing about 2500 then shooting for 180 at the wheels, you will have plenty of power to break the wheels loose. I think camshafts are going to play a big role when it comes to making up that top end power. And honestly i wouldnt mind too much about loosing low end power after all that long stroke is going to provide you more low end power then any Honda or 86's 1.6 will ever produce.

Let it breath, maybe look into head work. what kind of gas do you have availible? if you got 93 octane on the pump go to that 11.7:1 compression motor, one guy on NICO was able to run that with out problems on a 510. If you only have 91 outthere unless you want to experiment check out the 11.1:1 ratio setup, or even alittle less, and hell you have the HC pistons already, i hope there not damaged. and one advantage to NA (im not pushing mone idea over another, there all good ideas) is you really dont have to worry about internal work. maybe some forged pistons or something while your at it, just incase of predetination but that will really just delay the damage, not prevent it.

Anyways if you want to run 87 octane or something then a regular compression setup should work fine, and you can still make some decent power that way.

Of course we are always here to help you with advice or crazy ideas

a rB25de would make the Ultimate NA S13. However the RB swap puts alot of extra weight on the car and not done properly can throw off the weight distribution, when done properly it will be awesome, but when upgrading to a RB you need to consider the extra weight, your stock braking and suspension systems will probably have to be upgraded to. lots of little stuff.

Awesome swap, but not exactly as simple as swapping in a SR or newer KA
