Touge

Touge means a winding moutain road, but the direct translation is Moutain-Road. There are many nouns in our language and in japanese that we use as verbs.. "Im going to skateboard" would be an example. but no one would question that except a upity english teacher.

What i am trying to get at is lets not pretend we are cooler then someone use because they used the word Touge.. Hell old pfeiffer was calling it the touge to me last night (haha i think i made him mad) no one would correct that guy's language or consider him a "n00b" or anything. Im sure that wasnt the case here. but i've seen stuff like this go down that road like "Gee yeah you sure are jdm you ricer you said touge, your not even in japan its called a "road" here" then they drive down "el camino" avenue and eat at Los Sambraror (eh dont know the spelling, but one of them spanish hats that translates to "hat" FYI "el camino" literally means the road.. and yes in my town we have a "camino rd")

yes, i love running the touge around here, in fact, i was up there yesterday. driving on roads such as tight mountain passes is fun, but we must all remember the danger of it. but to me, the danger is makes it even more fun, but if one is not careful, one can go down very hard

People who drive hard and are familiar with what a car feels like at it's limits are much safer drivers then people who granny it everywhere. In the event of an emergency, they have a much better idea of what they can ask the car to do or not do, as opposed to someone who has never driven hard and will simply panic or make poor corrections when the car looses traction or whatever.

And we're not even talking about people who have proper instruction, just people who drive around on the street. Having proper instruction makes a bigger difference still.

The hood was lightened by cutting the ribs out from under it, then I painted it flat black. If you look at a lot of the SPEED touring cars they do the same thing. It makes the hood very flimsy but it's worth the weight reduction. One thing to keep in mind, If you're going to push the car, you're going to crash. It's just a matter of statistics. You have to know the car is expendable, and that it's just a matter of time before something happens. If you go to the touge, push the limits of yourself and your car, the chance that something will happen is pretty high. It may be because of an extenuating circumstance, or it might be because of driver error. On a side note, when you guys run the touge, what's in your mind? I find I think of nothing, my mind is totally blank, all the inputs to the car come from feel and sound. I never look at the tach, there's no time if you're fully committed. Funny that my ultimate meditation comes at 80mph through the S curves...

Parry you are right and you are dead wrong all in the same sentence. People who are familiar with their cars are better at controlling things should they go astray but only when they are alone. If you are out there blasting your road and you run across an old couple who may have gotten on the wrong road, then you are in trouble. Just because you are better at driving than them, that won't change the fact that they are going to freak out when you approach them at a high speed and no amount of familiarity is going to help you when they cros into your lane. Then you are the one that gets dead or nailed. You thinking you are a good driver and exceeding the speed limit will make them all the more sketchy when you run across them.

On the highway what you described is the case. The slower you go, the more danger you are to the surrounding populace. On the mountains it's totally different. The faster you are going the more dangerous you are to everyone else. And the fact that 99% of the people that run the mountains for fun think they are a better driver than they actually are, makes them 10x more dangerous.

High speed mountain driving is not for the young, the inexperienced or the stupid. Unfortunately more often than not, these 3 go hand in hand. It's one thing to wipe yourself out, it's totally another to overcook a corner and ram someones mom or a recreational bike rider out to cruise the parkway.

Heres a big question I've been rolling around in my head... Why isnt the Eclipse more popular of a touge car? AWD, Turbo... that sounds like a touge car to me... its backed by a bunch of aftermarket support and what not. The only reason i could figure is the handling... I'm not sure about how well it handles...

Well his isn't AWD or Turbo. But it should still be a fun car. I am not a big fan of FWD on the mountain. Even though I now have a CRX that handles well with the upgrades, I still have half the faith in that car as my FD. For me, RWD is the last line of defense on the touge. AWD is good as well too. In RWD, you can always steer with the rear end in a pinch. With FWD, you can't. You lose that small safety buffer. My CRX isn't shabby. It runs Tokico blues, HR springs, cross and slitted rotors and sway bars so it handles pretty well. But the FD will hand it the pink slip.

So on the Touge watch out if you running FWD. Some like it, some don't. It's all a matter of preference. As for the Touge itself, Touge is alot harder in my opinion then Drifting simply for the mind factor. A Touge run on the Dragon lasts for 15 mins or more and that is full out. Curve after curve, dodging wildlife, other vehicles and constantly scanning every single thing around you will trying to not fly off the road. Am I going too fast? Am I in my lane? Is there a car coming? Did I turn off the stove? All of these things add up plus the amount of physical energy it takes to pilot the car all adds up to something that almost isn't fun. The secret to the Touge isn't the car, it's the driver.
