I hear what you're saying about the difference in FWD and RWD. However the suspension in my car has gotten to the point where it will cause the car to oversteer at the limit as opposed to understeer. You're absolutely right about the driver. Power is nothing without control.

One thing that gets to me Ghost.. and its probably my inexperience showing.. My biggest obstical is me.. My eyes start itching.. or my hands get sweaty.. If im not there mentally its dangerous and i will slow down.. I almost cant image 15 minutes full out. Night is the worse because my eyes are constantly trying to refocus...

Like i said its all my inexperience little things will start to bug me. Im not dumb enough to go full out when im like that, or try to rub my eyes or something while im driving.. but you know what i mean right?

i get that on the highway, but our touge run isnt that long. full out it takes like 5-6 mins uphill, 4-5 mins down. Ghost, im with you on the whole feeling more secure in a RWD. i watched a friend of mine hit sand on the touge and understeer into a wall...he was in a civic, and in a rwd you can just drop the clutch and stuff the back end, rather than possibly jack up your motor or radiator....but like you said, its personal preffrence, and my friend is scared to death in a RWD...so he uses a Civic wagon.

Eh well i make few hard hard touge runs but i do take long long drives threw california's longer roads. 20-40 miles or even the longer ones like the well known highway 1. I drive casually but for me casually is alittle hard. And admittedly ocasionally i open it up.

same here....i cant wait until my SR shows up so that i can get it in and start making actual touge runs. right now i only have my moms datsun to take up there, and it is sluggish, and not quick at all.....

say, nissan_guy, what did you do about your 240? didnt the motor go on it?

Driving hard is left open to interpretation.
I run through the canyons as hard as I can YET that is not as hard as some would seemingly imagine. I know the limits of the vehicle, and the tires. And the edge of fear keeps me alert an... some would say... slow. Slower than them anyhow!

yeah, right now i am usually only doing about 40 mph on the downhill, there my friend was doing 70 mph....im still trying to get over my fear of the steepness, but im sure when i get back into my car my confidence will go up. i just like to have a good set of brakes and a responsive machine beneath my feet. with my SR20DET (S13 version, redtop) i will hope to make about 230- 245 peak hp, but im tuning it for response, not high power. its a battle car, not a hwy speed machine

umm no one hath answered my questioneth!!

well i would still ike to know on how to go about cutting the ribs off my hood, what tool, where to get it, etc PLEASE!!

u see i have been on the mountain for about a year now and its BEYOND intense, where i ride, its VERY VERY steep on the downhill portion which is where i like it best, and no and FD cant beat a CRX just like taht, it really depends on the driver, all cars are pretty even. taking the right line while risking an on coming car, factoring braking with downhill inertia, yeah its wild. my friends and i run s13's and s14's and we are looking for rx-7's, AE86's, subarus and lancers as well as type-r's and CrX's to race against us!! we do race eachotehr which is eshilarating (initial D chase style) but we want to try out other divers/cars.

and again, i am on a tight budget and need to lighten my hood, what tool do i use and where can i rent it?!?! thanks again!!

you could use a cutting torch....or tin snips would prolly work too, just not as well.

                          Errrrrr. Big multi-part reply...

I didn't say I was in favor of people driving like maniacs, I didn't say I thought it was safe in general. Obviously the harder you drive the higher the chances you'll blow it are. I learned that lesson the hard way, I assure you of that lol

All I'm saying is that people who are familiar with basic car controll practicies, specificly at the limits of handling, are usually more capable drivers. How you aquired those skills is your buisness, and was probably dangerous, as you said.

As far as FF goes, I guess it is all a matter of preference and the driver. With proper techniques and driving, you can do some impressive things in arse-draggers. I guess that'd explain why I'm slow, hahahaha.

As far as hood lightening does, if you need to ask how to use a torch don't even try it. Get yourself a cut-off tool and a grider and just go to town.

they make electric versions as well, of course.

4 1/2" angle grinder is $20 at Harbor freight.

The car's suitability to the course also plays a factor - my CRX would have beat out my Legacy Turbo on a twisty road, but on a moderately curvey road the Legacy would oblitorate all.

On different sections of the same road different cars will be faster - my CRX is faster on twisty sections, but the AWD of the Legacy could 4-wheel drift around the hairpins and pull way ahead.

FD versus CRX would be a good battle on the Dragon, and hopefully if a certian Rex is up to spec, maybe A certian someone will go tandem with you Ghost (with a number of practice runs and proper safety precautions in order)

Yea, SMC, I know what you are talking about. On the mountain I listen to no music, I try and clear my head of all thoughts and listen to the car. It sounds corny and goofy but it works. Actually, I rarely listen to music and if I do, it's really low. It comes from my youth when all my cars were crappy and I needed to listen to what they were doing so I could be forewarned of crappage. I also scan my guages bout every 5 secs. Even in the FD. With the sound thing, I got REALLY good at diagnosing cars by sound. If you see him, ask Rubhammusan. I can tell you what's wrong with your car by just listening to it. Even the smallest things. Strange talent that is pretty much useless.

and no and FD cant beat a CRX just like taht, it really depends on the driver, all cars are pretty even.
Um....are you serious? All cars are pretty much even? Man are you confused. Alot depends on the driver, that is totally true, but a great driver in a crappy car becomes a decent driver. Alot depends on the equipment too. Don't let Initial D fool you. Have you ever driven an FD? If you have then you'll realize that your statement is a little off base. StreetDREAMER is right.

taking the right line while risking an on coming car,
You are the type of person noone needs on the mountain. You are the type of person that gets people killed. That sentence pretty much sums it up.

I'm not trying to be mean to you but you got alot to learn. Running the mountains is alot like soul surfing. Same thing. You go up there to better yourself and to become one with your machine. Only by doing that can you become better. It's not really whos the fastest or any of that. Though it goes with that, it's not the prime objective. A great mountain runner is one who can do it fast while STAYING in his own lane. Your roads may be different than mine, but on mine, if you leave your lane you are 95% sure there IS going to be a car in the other lane. Especially at this time of year. So try and remember, this ain't Japan. People travel mountain roads at night round here. Don't kill them.
