The 2005 Formula D season as seen on G4 may be taking place entirely in the U.S., but there's no denying the Eastern roots of drifting. To get a better appreciation for the sport and its heritage, we sent last year's third-place finisher Chris Forsberg to Japan to see how drifting got its start.
Upon landing at Tokyo's Narita International Airport, Chris met up with friend and fellow Formula D competitor Daijiro Yoshihara, who would serve as his guide for the trip. Daijiro commutes to the U.S. to compete in each Formula D event, but spends the rest of his time in his native Japan.
Though drifting was made popular on the winding mountain roads of Japan called touge, Daijiro and Chris find that the increase in traffic and police monitoring at Hachioji make drifting in the old style a no-go. However, they were able to meet up with D1 legend Nobushige Kumakubo and go for a few spins around his Ebisu Circuit, which includes the harrowing Ebisu South Course and a replica of the original touge roads--without police, of course.
