Advisory for all Drivers and Team Members

    TO: Formula D Participants
FR: Formula Drift Race/Event Operations Committee
    DT: May 13, 2005
RE: PA#1-5.13.05 – Major Rule Updates for 2005

    1. “Code of Conduct” section (d), reminder of safety:

Formula Drift Rulebook states, “Paddock and on track conduct: A driver or crew member that is acting is such a way that he/she is endangering others will be fined a minimum of $500.00 dollars and up to $10,000 dollars.” All drivers and teams must keep in mind at all times, track safety, and be aware of the environment around you, your team and your vehicle. Formula D reserves the right to deem what actions constitute a safety hazard. Negligence in any nature to any safety matter will not be tolerated.

    2. “Code of Conduct” violation penalties:

Formula Drift Rulebook states, “The Driver is responsible for his and his crews conduct all times during a Formula Drift event. Drivers, crews and officials are to act in a professional manner.” To add to this statement in the rulebook: First offense by any crew member of a given team will result in a warning and be issued on probation for the following event. Second offense by any crew member of the same team will result in the placement of the team on probation for the remainder of the season, a fine of $100 to $1,000, and/or a deduction of 1 to 54 points. Third offense by any crew member of the same team will result in the removal and disqualification of the team from the competition. Formula D reserves the right to make the final decision on what constitutes a violation of conduct. In extreme cases, and with repeated violations, warnings may not be issued and consequences may be more severe.

    3. “Code of Conduct” in regards to driver and team conduct:

During the course of any Formula Drift activity, including but not limited to competitions and demonstrations, any driver and/or team member that conducts him/herself in an inappropriate manner with Formula Drift officials and/or staff will be subject to the same penalties as listed above.

    4. “Code of Conduct” in regards to demeanor toward official judges:

Every Formula Drift competition driver and team member has the right to ask and discuss with the judges regarding their performance, improvement, and the judging format. At no time shall any driver and/or team member question any judge’s score, credibility, or final decision. Any driver and/or team member that conducts him/herself in an inappropriate manner with the official judges will be subject to the same penalties as listed above.

    5. Usage of spare cars:

Formula Drift will no longer allow any competition driver to use a secondary vehicle during championship competition. The vehicle that a driver/team begins the competition with must be the same and only vehicle the driver/team uses during the course of the specific competition weekend.

    6. “One More Time”:

Formula Drift will allow only one “one more time” run per round per elimination round pair. Formula Drift will also be working on the installation of an “instant replay” system.

    7. Early Departure:

No competition teams are allowed to leave the Formula Drift team paddock/pit area prior to the beginning of the Semi-Final round due to public safety and fire lane restrictions. Violation of this rule will result in the loss of preferred pit space size and/or a minimum fine of $1,000.

    8. Media Rides and Demonstrations:

All media rides and demonstrations will not count against a team and/or driver’s practice time.

    9. Event Day Information:

Formula Drift will provide a “bulletin board” at the “drivers lounge” with updated schedules, announcements, points standings, qualifying order, etc. It is for the driver and the driver’s team to refer to this “board” for all the updated information.

    10. Driver’s Meetings:

All drivers competing will be responsible for being present and on time at all driver’s meetings that pertain to them. Driver’s who fail to meet this responsibility will be fined. In order for drivers to confirm their presence, they must check in with a Formula D official to check off their names.

    11. The Start:

Formula Drift will be instituting a rolling start rule during tandem competition. From the line where the FD/SCCA starter gives the green flag to a preset marker/cone, both competition cars must maintain steady pace. Once the lead car crosses the marker/cone then the judging run will begin and both cars may proceed at full speed. This procedure will be thoroughly explained at the driver’s meetings.

Heh, the "cone on a leash" is what we call that on the short tracks.

clarification - in open wheel racing, with a single file restart, a cone attached to a rope is placed in the middle of the straightaway. The cars must all pass on the same side of the cone before passing or moving out of line on the restart. After they've all passed, the corner worker pulls the cone back in.

I'm glad Formula Drift is actively trying to move the show along and I'm glad that they've instituted the one car/one driver policy. It should make for much more competitive motorsport.

Those are good changes, I think they will help even the competition a little. I always hated watching the Viper or GTO exit the first turn before the other car entered it, seemed so unfair.

What I particularly think is rad, is that FD has the gonards to change up their rules midseason to fix obvious problems. They adapted rather than say something like "we'll address those for next season"...good work.

Also, on a completly different note, the next post will be Info's 666th. HEAVY METAL!!!!

i think it's awesome...i wonder what they'll do for instant replay, various cameras around the track? I can imagine the announcement at the event: ATTENTION ANYONE WITH A CAMCORDER PLEASE APPROACH THE JUDGING TABLE.

yes, i like that they did this. rather than waiting til next season they did it mid season. i really like the cone and instant replay. this will save a little drama and save the cars from overheating and such.

i wonder how they are going to do a rolling start in houston. it's a parking lot

FD has been really doing a good job at improving the events. The two day qualifying has made for a better show for the fans. Things are running on schedule. It has been a very good show so far this season, and i'm glad they are making improvments as the season goes along.

I do have a few questions to clarify the rules adjustments.

First off, while I understand that it will vary from course to course, how much space will there be between the beginning of the judged area and the first corner?

I ask this because while I understand the desire to keep drivers from running away at the start (i.e. Sam at Atlanta v Taka) I do feel it's entirely unfair to hamstring high-power cars by disallowing them the space to get up to speed for high speed, high angle entries like those that Millen and Hubinette have become experts at.

If the start cone is placed too close to the first corner, then we've crossed the line from evening competition to a deliberate handicap on big power cars.

Secondly, I am curious as to what standards of behaviour that Formula Drift will be holding its drivers and teams to. NASCAR has a similar byline for penalizing its teams and drivers: "Actions Detrimental to the Sport of Stock Car Racing".

Unfortunately, "Actions Detrimental" because of its vague nature, has become a tool for NASCAR's political agenda, forcing drivers and teams to curb criticism of other drivers/teams and of NASCAR's policies, rules, and actions.

I would desperately like to know that the "Code of Conduct" is not another "Actions Detrimental".

i think the rules of conduct are there to ensure that drivers don't go crazy endangering others ie. speeding through pit row, doing burn outs surrounded by a crowd. Formula D has been very reasonable to this point, after all what can formula d do to penalize if these rules weren't established.
