My main camera is a 20D, with a 300D as backup. Lens used are mainly Canon: 28-80 F2.8-4.0L, 70-200 F2.8L, and 300mm F4.0L. I've misc. other lens as either backup or for specialty shots. F-stops are usually in the F3.5-5.6 range for static shots, unless I'm doing tripod shots, then F8-F11. Action shots are done with a general car speed = shutter speed ratio. In other words, if I'm shooting drift cars doing about 80-100km/h through the corner, then shutter speeds are around 1/80th to 1/100th of a second. If I'm shooting Indy cars doing 200mph through the corner, then shutter speeds are around 1/200th of a second. F-stops in that case are purely up to the available light, usually in the F11 to F16 range. If it is too bright, I will use a 2-stop ND filter to darken the scene up and keep the F-stops low.
I encourage anybody interested in the motorsports photography end of life to check out automotivephoto.com, it's a good site to learn at.
Cheers,
Paul Hansen

My main camera is a Nikon F100 (yes i'm still shooting film). Mainly shooting with Nikkor 300mm f/2.8 and 17-35mm. My technique is similar to Paul's. I'm always on a monopod when I'm shooting with the 300. When I was shooting at GT Live, all the photogs around me was checking if their shot was sharp after the cars had pass, at the same time I was standing there praying to God hoping my images are sharp LOL. I got access to a lab, so I don't really see a need to shoot digital.
