Hello everyone and welcome to the second edition of the Need For Speed Formula Drift Newsletter. Our goal is to provide a monthly newsletter with the most updated happenings in the NFSFD world. Items like general news, car builds, pictures, updated championship points, contingency announcement, rumors and/or anything else of importance or relevance to NFSFD. This newsletter will be created internally within the NFSFD office, however content from drivers, teams, managers, sponsors can be sent to Ryan@formulad.com for submission into the newsletter.
Rumor has it that the new A1GP is scouting for drifting activity for their American debut and Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.
Formula Drift has announced further details of for the Long Beach and Denver round of Champ Car exhibitions. For Long Beach, up to 18 drivers will be chosen to compete in team drift format where the winners will be decided by the more than 80,000 fans on race day. Denver is proposing an invitational shootout on the famed road course that would feature the top 8 drivers in FD competing for a large cash purse.
DG Trials recently released its complete 2006 season practice and mini-competition schedule. With events all over the East Coast, no matter where you are, you can find quality drifting practice venues and instruction. Additionally, for advanced drivers, DGTrials has announced the creation of a tandem practice group help develop the new breed of competitive drifters. IMPORTANT NOTICE: March 6th is the last day to register your vehicle for competition of Round One of the Need For Speed Formula Drift Championship. All registrations after that point are not guaranteed and will incur a late fee.
Here are the finishes for the 2nd Need For Speed Formula Drift Qualifier event:
• Quoc Li (Full Season Provisional License)
• Wesley Hamachi (Limited-Event Provisional License)
• Andy Sapp
• Bill Sherman
Quoc was given a Full Season Provisional License and Wesley has been granted a Limited-Event Provisional License. Andy and Bill have been invited down to San Diego for the next qualifier.
As we reported last month, Rockstar Energy Drink will be supporting a two car effort in this year's NFSFD Championship. The second driver will be "Big Smoke" Ben Schwartz. Ben, along with Dai Yoshihara will be piloting Rockstar/Nitto branded vehicles.
005 NFSFD Champion Rhys Millen will debut a brand new Pontiac for the 2006 season. The car will be built directly by GM. Vehicle and specs to be released shortly. Rhys will be piloting his current GTO for the first event in Long Beach however.
Team Kaaz recently announced that for the 2006 season they will be title sponsored by Hankook Tire. The team will consist of three drivers. Barry Wong, Bryan Norris and female Japanese driver Hiromi Kajikuma who is yet to be licensed.
Team Jasper Performance has signed Conrad Grunewald and Quoc Ly as their official drivers for the 2006 NFSFD Championship. Conrad will drive the famous Jasper Supra. Quoc will be driving a S13.
Team RSR has signed Tyler McQuarrie to drive a newly built Honda S2000.
Rockstar Energy Drink has announced that they will be come a major sponsor of the 2006 Need For Speed Formula Drift Championship. Along with their support of Dai Yoshihara and Ben Schwartz, they now become the first energy drink to sponsor NFSFD at this level.
EA Games will announce shortly the title of the new game that will be promoted at this year NFSFD Championship series. We hear that drifting will possibly play a big role in the game and that the technology that will be featured in the game will be better that any other automotive game they have produced.
Formula Drift has signed an agreement with Live Sockets to create and distribute the 2005 NFSFD DVD series. The DVD series will showcase all of the 2005 G4 TV broadcasts as well as never before seen footage.
