Drifting Championship Driver Rhys Millen Returns to His Roots
to Pilot Rally Car in 2006 X-Games
DVS Shoes backed team enters new rally category
in ultimate extreme sport thriller
Huntington Beach, Calif. (July 26, 2006) -- Championship winning Formula D drift competitor and professional television and motion picture stunt driver Rhys Millen will drive the number six DVS Shoes Subaru rally car in the 2006 X-Games taking place in Los Angeles August 2 through 6. Joining already established extreme motorsports like freestyle Motocross, rallying will be featured for the first time this year at the televised X-Games and promises to bring European stadium-style 4-wheel dirt sliding excitement to the American fans. Millen began his motorsport career in rally over fifteen years ago and brings a tremendous level of skill and competition to the already impressive grid of X-Games rally competitors.
The DVS Shoes Subaru STI will be campaigned by Techsport Racing of Phoenix Arizona, with the support of associate sponsors Vividracing, Jegs.com, Millen’s drifting sponsor Red Bull with tires supplied by BF Goodrich. Co-driving with Millen for the X-Games rally is World Rally Championship competitor and 2005 rally Group-N champion Tony Sircombe. Supported, operated and driven by world-class organizations and individuals, the DVS Shoes rally team will no doubt be a formidable competitor in this year’s inaugural X-Games rally event.
The rally stadium segments of the 12th annual X-Games will be held at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California with the field segments being run in the rugged canyon fire trails in the Angeles National Forest just north of Los Angeles. These proven rally stages have been used by several local events, including the Annual Rim of the World Rally, one of the largest and highest attended rallies in America. These rock laden mountain roads are notorious for testing the durability and endurance of both man and machine.
"This is a tremendous opportunity to return to the world of rally through a new partnership with our team title sponsor DVS Shoes," said Millen. "With the skilled level of competitors gathered for the first X-Games rally and our brilliant team of experienced rally professionals, this will be one exciting and action filled event."
After years behind the wheel of premier rally programs including the Mitsubishi Motors factory-backed team in the SCCA ProRally championship, Millen has spent the last three seasons sliding his powerful Pontiac GTO around asphalt tracks at Formula D drifting events. In addition to competition, he recently performed the drifting stunt sequences in this summer’s blockbuster The Fast and the Furious Tokyo Drift as well as last summer’s The Dukes of Hazzard motion picture. Between winning the 2005 Formula D championship and his big screen driving appearances, Millen is the most recognized driver in the American drifting motorsports scene.
Marking its entry into the X-Games as the title sponsor of Millen’s rally team,
