Daijiro Yoshihara Wins “Final Fight”, Hubinette Wins Championship
Formula Drift crowns Daijiro Yoshihara the winner of the 7th and final round. Samuel Hubinette regains title as 2006 Formula Drift Champion.
Long Beach, California, October 19, 2006
In an event that could not be more dramatic, long time Formula Drift favorite and Rockstar Energy Drink/Nitto Tire/Pacific Rim Driver Daijiro Yoshihara won the seventh and final round of the Need For Speed Formula Drift Championship. Yoshihara took out an entire field of the top drivers including 2004 Champion Samuel Hubinette and 2005 Champion Rhys Millen in the final round to earn his first ever Formula Drift win.
As for the season Championship, 2005 Champion Rhys Millen entered the final round more than 30 points away from 2004 Champion Samuel Hubinette for the 2006 Championship points lead. Millen had mechanical failure in Round 6 and lost his lead going into the Finale. Millen needed to win the event and Hubinette had to finish worse than 4th for Millen to become the Champion. Hubinette and Millen would not meet in the early rounds which may have given Millen an opportunity to take out Mopar driver Hubinette. Instead, Hubinette met Team JIC driver Kenji Yamanaka in the quarterfinal round and pulled off a win. The win reclaimed his championship which was lost to his friend Millen in the 2005 season. The team celebrated on track once Hubinette advanced to the semifinal round.
Hubinette, Foust and Millen have all taken home a win this season, Gittin Jr. had a best of 4th place, but mechanical problems did nothing to help Gittin Jr. at both New Jersey and Long Beach. Hubinette has the most consistent record, never placing worse then 7th and taking home 3 event wins, he also has more Formula DRIFT event wins then any other driver.
