  • First drift/FF drift...

I was riding with my friend to the junkyard today and it is on a dirt road with 90 degree S chicane style turn (left 90 degrees then right 90 degrees). We went around the first turn and then on the second turn he dropped a gear and nailed it. (this is all in a FF ford probe I don't like fords.) The back end started to slide of due to the speed and it got out pretty far, he countersteered, but the car snapped back and shot across the road. He put the clutch in and then braked and the car stopped. We continued to the junkyard but he was pretty shook up.

What I want to know is why did the car snap back. The same thing happened to that civic in the Teckademics movie. It seemed like the back tires caught and flung the back end around.

i'm guessin it because he didn't get sideways enough...you could say, i go sliding my civic on drive asphault at a local kamrt and it's never done that too me....thats very interesting....now that i think about it...he probaly countersteered TOO much...

Yeah. Countersteering too much or possibly because in real drifting/FR drifting, whatever you wanna call it, the rear wheels are spinning to keep traction and to lose traction. in FWD the rear wheels aren't spinning as much during the slide maybe, in most of the vids I've seen of FF drift, not spinning at all. If the wheels aren't spinning enought then they keep too much traction which would cause the countersteerign to be more effective. I guess plaenty of stuff could have caused it. We should all take as many physics classes as possible. Then we'd all know a ot more about how to drift no matter what car or what surface. I may be wrong. I've overcorrected during a slide and ended up in a ditch, so I know how that happens, but I don't know about the wheel spin thing out of experience. I just applied simple physics I learned in high school. Fun stuff. Just don't get killed. Nothin wrogn with Probes... kinda. Put a 13B in it.

Thanks for the replys. He didnt ebrake or use any brake so the rear tires could have still been spinning it just exceeded the grip of the rear tires. Thanks again for the info as soon as I get my license I want to try some drifts in my FF (safely of course) till I can get a FR.

I wonder if it had anything to do w/ the fact that it was on a dirt road?

I agree with the too much counter-steer part, but he could of also saved it if he kept the front wheels spinning to pull him through the drift.

doesnt matter if you use the ebrake or not, too much counter-steer will make the back whip back... i almost smashed into a curb that way but luckily i was able to counter counter steer and bring it back... i dont think it had anything to do with it being a dirt road because it would whip back on a paved surface more than a dirt surface...but i wasnt there so i cant tell you exactly what went wrong.

you can use a lot of FR techniques... feign, braking, kinda powerover, weight transfer, and of course ebrake but u can use all above without ebrake... and you dont have to be so rude. so better watch it or else pita bread will get u.

I wasn't being rude hence the "lol"

anyways you try not to countersteer too much. What about like a really weak car like a sentra or something, fient and all still work on concrete?

oh sorry i didnt see the lol... um a sentra probaby i use a ford escort wagon which is less than 170 hp and is FF and i have used feign and a sort of powerover technique without using the e brake. so anywayz sorry about what i sed i didnt see the lol.
