According to a magazine article I had (I'll post more when I find the article), the car was going to be built as a RHD to make it easier for the Japanese drivers he was hiring and flying to the US. yea, the rx-7 that miki was driving was converted to RHD. now they are building an RX-8 that will be LHD

This is a smarter idea, anyhow, considering our economy. Now, you don't have to spend a grand every time you needed a Japanese driver and continues to bring our drivers up from the Pro Am.
