Strong debut for Kyle Mohan’s 2009 Mazda RX-8
April 15, 2009 (Signal Hill, Calif.) – It was all smiles for local driver Kyle Mohan after he tackled the first round of the Formula Drift Pro Championship in a new, 2009 Mazda RX-8 that was built by his team at their facility not far from the downtown track.
Mohan put his RX-8 solidly in the field for the first round of tandem competition, in 18th place with a score of 72.3, and would face off in the first round against fellow Cooper Tires teammate Tony Brakohiapa.
Mohan chased in the first run, allowing a gap in the first part of the course before closing on the Mustang rapidly entering the Queen’s Hairpin. It was a little too rapid, unfortunately, and Mohan spun entering the hairpin to avoid hitting Brakohiapa’s car. With nothing to lose, Mohan laid down a smoking run when it was his turn to lead, nearly forcing Brakohiapa to correct. Despite that run, and with one judge calling for a One More Time, Brakohiapa advanced and Mohan’s day was finished.
Ever upbeat, Mohan was thrilled with the performance of his car and still flashed a huge smile after the round of 32.
“With a new car, it’s always a question mark in its first weekend of competition,” said Mohan. “We had a couple of days in the car under our belts and it was working great and getting better with each run, but getting into competition is another thing.
“It is a testament to how good the Mazda RX-8 is, and to what great the products we have on the car – like our Cooper 2XS tires – that we were this strong in our first event. We know there’s a lot of potential in this car and we are pumped for round two at Road Atlanta.”
Next for Mohan will be the Team Drift competition during the Long Beach Grand Prix this coming weekend. The car will then be sent to Road Atlanta for round two of the Formula Drift Pro Championship.
Kyle Mohan competes in the Formula Drift Pro Championship with the support of Mazdatrix, Cooper Tire, Mazda USA, JIC Magic, Exedy Racing Clutch, Turbonetics, XXR Wheels, Mishimoto, TCSportline, F&L Racing Fuel, EF1 Motorsports, WPC Treatments and Sparco USA.
