FAIRFAX, Va.--(April 23, 2010)--ExxonMobil and Gardella Racing announced they will team up for the 2010 season in a partnership that expands ExxonMobil's commitment to motorsports and to drifting, a high-performance form of racing.
"Partnering with a leading drift team like Gardella Racing allows us to showcase the technological benefits of Mobil 1"
The main vehicle competing under the Gardella Racing banner this year will be a Mobil 1 Pontiac Solstice GXP driven by the 2008 Formula Drift "Driver of the Year" Ryan Tuerck. Gardella Racing will use Mobil 1 motor oils, gear oils and greases, and Mobil 1 branding will appear on Gardella Racing's cars, uniforms and vehicles.
"Partnering with a leading drift team like Gardella Racing allows us to showcase the technological benefits of Mobil 1," said David Tsurusaki, strategic global alliance manager, ExxonMobil Lubricants & Specialties. "ExxonMobil engineers will work closely with the Gardella team to ensure peak engine output. As another part of Mobil 1's well-rounded, world-class racing program, this collaboration underscores the engine performance and protection that Mobil 1 technology delivers on the track and on the road."
Gardella Racing and ExxonMobil have had a long relationship that goes back to the sport compact drag racing days of team owner Gary Gardella. Gardella was racing his Chevy Cobalt when Mobil 1 began its sponsorship of the championship driver, and he has seen continued success ever since. Last year, Gardella Racing finished the Formula Drift season in second place, missing out on the championship by only six points. "I am very excited to have Mobil 1 come onboard the Gardella Racing program as our primary sponsor," said Gardella. "I feel that with the support of Mobil 1 technology, Gardella Racing will be unstoppable in 2010. This is a very exciting time for all of us at Gardella Racing, and we thank Mobil 1 for this great opportunity." Gardella Racing will also stage promotions at various Formula Drift events throughout the season to help spread synthetic lubricant education in the youth market.
"The fact that a company like ExxonMobil is supporting our program this year says a lot about the Gardella Racing team," Tuerck said. "ExxonMobil has been supporting top racing teams across the world for over 30 years, and I am really excited to have such a great company, with a race-proven product, providing our GM ECOtec engines protection and performance on the track."
A Long History of Performance: Mobil 1 in Motorsports
Mobil 1, the world's leading synthetic motor oil brand, has long been the lubricant of choice for race teams competing in the most demanding and popular motorsports series across the globe.
Mobil 1's history in motorsports officially began in 1978 with a sponsorship of the Williams Formula One Racing Team. From that time, Mobil 1's presence on race tracks and circuits has grown by grand proportions. Today, Mobil 1 synthetic oil is relied on for its ability to deliver exceptional engine performance and protection even under some of the most extreme conditions by automotive technicians, race car drivers, team owners and the world's leading automotive manufacturers. Currently, more than half of the NASCAR teams rely on Mobil 1 technology.
Along with its status as the official motor oil of NASCAR, Mobil 1 enjoys a long association with many of the world's most popular and successful race teams, including Vodafone McLaren Mercedes' Formula One team, Corvette Racing's American LeMans Series team, the official AMG-Mercedes factory teams in the European-based DTM championship, Alex Job Racing Le Mans GT2 team, Penske Racing's NASCAR and IndyCar Series teams, as well as the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup-the world's fastest international one-make series.
