Read my post in the "another APC thread" thread and you will understand my feelings on this subject, It was halfway a reply to this thread and people bitching that driftng may get popular (as if its already not) if more then 2 people hear about it.

its that elitest wanna be attitude alot of guys have that i think hurts this community and hurts new guys who want to get in on it. Like i said there, its not like many of us learned about drifting because we were in the hills in japan and happened to stumble across it. 99 percent of, i would bet, heard about it threw media of some sort.

it was good for what it was....a movie. but then you watch the the behind-the-scenes making of the movie and you see a bunch of jackasses try to say that thier portraying the "import scene" whatever that is, and that just really pissed me off. People that talk about something of which they know nothing.

However, I think exposure is both good and bad and here's why:

negative publicity- just trying to get home from work and some billy bob cop pulls me over saying that I (choose your reason) and next time I'm getting a ticket or going to jail.

positive publicity- people from within making bada$$ videos and putting on cool events.
          ------------------------------
sh!ttalkers/naysayers- you know who these people are, there's millions of 'em on the planet.

kids who are ecstatic and genuinely about drifting-can't have a bunch of old farts drifting can we?
          -------------------------------
jackasses ready to hop on the bandwagon- selling thier fwd to buy up every 240, fc or hachi on the planet making junkyard pieces impossible to find. sorta like the b16,18,20 fad that made the prices of cheap motors skyrocket.

increasing the value of my car so I can overcharge jackass ready to hop on the bandwagon.
          ---------------------------------

it really is a double edged sword and you have to take the good with the bad. So just take a deep breath and not worry about the morons cause when they're gone we'll still be here.

It really sorta bites not being able to drive. I just watch how the Drift scene evolves w/out being able to take part. ~SIGH!~ Well, im praying (SERIOUSLY!) that all will go well with Drifting so that by the time I can drive:

1.) There will be official drifting at local tracks EVERY weekend.

2.) The above will be happening at more than one local track.

3.) The prices will be CHEAP-O like 20-25 dollars, 30-35 at most.

I know that these are BIG expectations, but one can hope cant he?

First the show's gotta last. The site said it's gonna be on Saturday mornings. So it'll be tough to keep the ratings up.

You should definitely want drifting to stay underground. I'm a skateboarder, and I have seen first hand what the results of all of this publicity is. It is generally not good. You basically end up attracting a lot of morons who end up ruining it for those who care. It's that simple.

Plus, there really is a nice feeling when you know about something so great and the world has no idea it even exists.

As for the argument that we wouldn't have the D1 over here. There is no way you could say that wouldn't have happened if drifting hadn't blown up. The main reason the drifting took off was because all of the magazines were covering stories of drift events with visiting Japanese, (some D1) drifters. I think a lot of driftings success in the US is owed to Club 4AG, and Signal Auto. When their events started getting coverage, that's when drifting blew up. The process had already started.

Boy do you have no clue what you are talking about. D1 might have been over here in say 2 years or more. It has taken more than 10 years for it to catch on in Japan. The ONLY reason you had that many teams here is because of mainstream coverage and APC. Don't believe me, check out some of the other cool sports that are still underground. Such as GPV. Gravity Powered Vehicles. Bikes that bomb hills at more than 70 mph. No coverage, no catch on. You guys are like a bunch of Viet Nam era Hippies. You all call everyone the bandwagonners but yet you jump right on the "I hate anything not underground" bandwagon. Remind me of the "Mallternative" crowd. Running around with your dyed hair and spiked bracelets. You think it makes you stand out and somehow cooler than the "normal" people when you youself shop at the same mall to get all that crap. You are the same person, just packaged differently.

As for Skateboarding being ruined because of coverage, are you out of your mind. Yet another topic you know nothing about. Skateboarding has done nothing BUT benefit from being mainstream. I want you to give me 3 good reasons why it hasn't benefitted. "oh you can't skate anywhere" Well let's see. I have skateboarded since the late 70's and you couldn't skate anywhere back then. Skateboarding would be nowhere near the level it is today without everything you said ruined the sport. Big corperations come in and pay someone to do nothing but skate. They come up with new tricks (since they can do nothing but skate all day), the level of competition goes up and your heros get better. Then y9ou watch your heros (in the magazines and TV shows that you say ruined the sport) and you get better. So how did that ruin skateboarding? Enlighten me.

As for mainstream briging the cops down on you, negative sailor. You bring the cops down on yourselves. Everytime you slide that rear end out and get caught. Ever heard of "word of mouth". Believe it or not, cops are normal people. THey catch John Q Slider Drifting at the local parking lot, they tell 3 friends and they tell 3 friends and pretty soon every swining d!ck in the land of cops knows about Drifting. They didn't get it from watching Spike or reading an Option Magazine. They don't have to. Any street trend comes to them long before any media does. And it's actually because of you undergrounders. You guys are the ones doing it first so naturally you guys are the first to get caught at it. So thanks alot undergrounders, you are ruining it for every body else.

All mainstream Drifting (and Skateboarding) is going to do is bring better products, more products and when it goes underground again, more stuff that you can buy cheap from all the bandwagonners that want to get out of it now. So I see no way it doesn't benefit any of you.

So once again, if you don't like mainstream then don't watch the shows, read the magazines or go to D1, cause if you do then you are pimping yourself out to the man Hippie.

I know the arugument has changed to the now "underground argument",but I just want to add a few more points and about it being on Spike, not the fact that drifting is on tv.

Ghost, your from Tennessee right? I'm sure you recall The Nashville Network. It was mecca of country, just like Japan is the dreamland for drifting,Nashville is for country. Thus TNN was born, obviously quite big.Later on though,TNN went from The Nashville Network to The National Network. It just went,up and dropped its country roots entirely.
I know other shows air and drop shows, these show's are usually pilots, that can be expected. But most networks don't entirely change what they cover, sure some shows change, but the genre usually remains the same.Let's look at Fox.Sure they've aired new sitcoms, but it's always been roughly the same audience over the years, and continues to be.But Spike, formerly TNN forgot about there old audience, and cry to captivate a new audience. They've failed twice already when doing this, something the other networks haven't.Spike being a network willing to entirely change there target audience in the spur of the moment is something of concern. If a show of this calibur is going to be aired,it must be planned, marketed correctly, but most of all stick to the grassroots as well so it can connect to the everyday man who not only drifts, but is interested in drifting.

As for Skateboarding. You don't know how much Tony Hawk done for the sport. If it wasn't for the X-Games and Tony's games, skateboarding wouldn't be this successful. You also have Dogtown and the Z-boys to thank as well, they actually are responsible for creating people like Tony Hawk.

well here is how it goes...95% of the ppl who read import tuner, superstreet, etc. think drifting is stupid and wish they would stop covering it. when you think about it, it might accutally get rid of the drift ricers. and no, not by killing them. first time they smash that integra into a wall at 60mph most of the time they wont try it again. and the show might accutally help ricers by showing them that FF suck and FR rule...end of story.FF suck and FR rule

First of all, just calm down. Just because we have a different idea doesn't mean we have to get all defensive and angry when somene disagrees.

Secondly read my introduction. I'm not even drifting yet, so I have caused no problems towards drifters getting caught. And as a skater I realize that I what I do is illegal and I accept full responsibility for the consequences, and also the potential physical harm.

Thirdly. You don't know me, so there is no way that you can lump me into the group of "mallternatives" whatever that maybe. Those sound like the kids that most of us would call posers. I don't like that word, but I don't know of a better one. These are the kids who saw the X-Games, went out and got a Birdhouse deck and then just carry it around and spray paint crappy looking tags at the spots. Then we get blamed for it. A lot of us start out as spiky haired kids, but then the older guys took us under their wing and showed us what really mattered. Thinking for yourself. Now we are the older kids and are doing the same thing for this new crop, So, maybe this whole thing will workout.

Skateboardings popularity runs in cylces. I'm sure you're aware of this. But when these stupid movies like Grind start coming out, it just underminds skateboarding. It makes us look stupid. You may see it as big corporations helping out, but all it really is, is big corporations jumping on the "bandwagon" so they can make a quick buck. Have you noticed that big corporations never even take notice until something has already been established and popular? And what happens after the popularity stops growing, or the even starts to dwindle? The big companies pull out, leaving "our heroes" with out sponsorship. And I don't know about you, but I never started skateboarding for competition. It is something that a true skater does out of love, and pure enjoyment. That is what attracted me to drifting. Drifting isn't about competition, it the complete antithesis of competion. It was something to do instead of race. It was a way to show off some personal flare, and to have fun. It has progressed to this point, and that is great. I just think that it is necesary to be careful of Big Bang so to speak. Because the Big Crash is inevitable. Just look at skateboardings history. It is in the middle of it's third big crash in less than 20 years. Everytime, it thins out the heard and those who truly love it, stick with it. Drifting will survive, it won't die. If skateboardings history is any indication, it will probably be more alive than ever after the crash occurs.

If I pissed you off. I'm sorry, that wasn't my intention.

Yes you are right. TNN is now Spike. The reason for the change is not due to them trying to find a market though. I do see your point. How can you trust a station that can't make us it's mind. True that Feint.

But let's look at the reasoning behind the change. TNN formerly Nashville Network was owned by one Gaylord Entertainment and was started in 1983. They then sold out TNN to Viacom which also owns CMT, Country Music Television. Now you can't have 2 sh!tkicking country stations at war with one another so they changed one. TNN became Spike. Now, while that is not always a good thing, let's look at Spike. Spike has the freshest, newest idea for TV. A network for men, US, you and I and every other testoteron based mammel who walks the concrete jungle. This has never been done before and it get's ALOT of traffic. Sure most of the people in TV programming land don't know the hardcore stuff but they do know men. So now we have our own channel to battle the big 3. You know those 3 channels that rot your girlfriends and wives minds. We, Hallmark and Oxygen. Those mind numbing channels that make our womenfolk ask us if they are fat or if that dress looks good on them. Those questions that NEVER have a right answer. If you say yes, then you are def on the couch, if you say no, they you are just saying that. No win situation.

We have our own channel. I for one am glad about that. That is why I think that this is the perfect channel to put this one. I also think that Sat morning is the perfect time for it. If you are married then your wife expects you to be up with the kids. You can watch it before you work in the yard or do whatever. You can think about it allllllll day in anticipation for the evenings frolickings. You now have something to look forward to on Sat mornings instead of the Smurfs. Think about it.

Then again if it sucks, well ok you got me there. But give it a chance. It may have some *Censored**Censored**Censored* hosts like those twin brothers but then again it may just have some good footage. And 30 secs of good footage is worth it for me.

Ok this one is for Trrust.

You didn't make me mad. Not at all. I just want you to see that mainstream is not bad. Mainstream does nothing but benefit the lowest on the totem, You and I. It gives us more resources for parts. It gives us alot more of a choice when the bottom falls out. People who bought those Birdhouse decks now want to give them away or trade em for something else. I can't tell you how much of that stuff I have. I still have an original Tony Hawk I got from some kid for a set of Handlebars when he wanted to do a bike. I still have the R.I.P. board from P&P. Think I still have my Fibreflex with the Sims Snake conical wheels on it. Got a G&S Ron Allen, John Lucero ( the REALLY cool Madrid one with the clown) and some others. Stuff like that wouldn't come out or would be years later if not for mainstream. I do see about the crappy movies though, remember Gleaming the cube? What a poop nugget that was. But it's a necessary evil to accomplish a goal. That goal being, getting what I want. I want good gear, I want alot of good gear and I want it cheap. Mainstream allows that to be possible.

Yes it does come in waves. Unfortunalty (or fortunatly) for Drifting, I predict one wave and one wave only. So we need to ride it for all it's worth. Cause after that wave, when all themoney pulls out of Drifting and the sponsers die down, we need to be left with enough of an underground to support us. The current one isn't good enough. This popularity has opened so many doors. Doors like Japanese companies being more open to sending stuff to the US, Drivers being more open to dealing with us. Parts being more readily available. Thats the sort of stuff that I look at, not all the goofballs getting into the sport. Let em get into it. THey are just going to buy alllll this expensive stuff and stick it on their car and either crash it or get bored. Then they see that the scene is dying and they want to get out of it. They sell their stuff CHEAP. Then I buy it at a fraction of what it cost new.

That's how it benefits you and I. The low men on the totem. We are one and the same, you and I and everyone on this site. We wan't anything that will make what we love to do easier.

Oh and whether you Drift or not, I better see you at Drift Atlanta. If not, I shall be forced to taunt you a second time
