I've been watching the Touge Showdowns on Best Motoring and I was wondering if drifting is really as big as it's made up to be during a touge race. Initial D has glorified drifting by sliding the cars on any piece of road that's remotely bending, but that's a cartoon aimed to entertain. In Best Motoring, a good part of the racing is done by following lines typically seen in grip driving. But I've also realized that the Touge Showdowns only reflect a sample of what mountain racing really is, since it's done on a portion of a race track. That grainy clip of a rx-7 going at it with a Skyline posted everywhere is probably a better representation of touge. I personally come to the conclusion that it depends on the track or road where the race takes place, the number of turns dictates how much drifting is put into practice. Hopefully I didn't sound too noob, but I'd like to hear what you guys think

How much of touge is spent drifting?

^Agree with above
It comes down to if you're racing or not. Drifting is a lot for show, but it can also be fast on the right corners. If I was going for speed, any drifting would be very specific and only if it was benificial. The drift angles would be small as well, almost steering with the rear tires and no more.
Also, you may or may not be able to drift every corner while maintaining a decent level of speed. Even when drifting on purpose(every corner or most corners) you may find it more natural to drift certain ones and not drift others. Usually, it comes down to speed. You may hold off on one corner to gain speed for the next. If you can't gain enough speed before a corner to do a proper drift, why do it. An example would be just drifting out of a sharp 90 and then have a sloping curve just ahead. You don't have the speed to start and maintain a constant drift through the sloping curve so why do it. That is if your goal is speed and time related. You may just swing from side to side during that sweeping curve for show, but if you're racing, you'll be very very slow.
It all varies on your purpose. Any of the touge battle stuff I've seen(only a few), the races have been nearly 100% grip. Any drifting was from error. That's in a race type situation though.

In Japan it depends on whos hill your on. There are hills that are "griped" and hills that are "drifted" I prefer the drifting over grip at the moment. 1. My car does not have the mechanical ability for high speed moutain racing. 2. Where we go every body drifts the full course.
I have grip raced for many years and have run the dirt ovals before to, If I could do it again I would have drifted that oval the 10 laps.

Learn to see the line, that's number 1 in any kind of racing. Also, think about it,your coming in fast in 5th,lets say 160km(don't know miles well). You have a third gear turn to the right, your going to heel-toe downshift two gears into thrid, the weight's going to shift to the front, your set for a brake drift.Obviously you have to consider the line, the apex, clipping point, which will determine when your going to have to counter.I wouldn't promote racing their, just look at how many times Tsuchiya put his Skyline over trying to learn.

thanks for the feedback. Now that you guys mention it, drifting on the touge seems more of thing done for show rather than to turn corners faster. Since drifting is borrowed from rally racing, I can see how it loses some of its practicality when moved onto a mountain road. however, drifting on touge is truly bada$$ stuff
For anyone looking for touge material, I think it's pretty hard to find good video clips, outside of touge showdowns. One time I was so desprate to see some touge, i started watching episodes of initial D, haha

I would agree with Feint, learn the lines of any track/road before trying to toss your car around. But first learn the limits of your own vehicle so it doesnt bite you in the a$$ when least expected. The extreme drifting, D1 style, is not the fastest way on the touge. Like others have said, drifting in the touge usually means you've exceeded your car's/tire's grip and/or screwed up (entering too hot or improper weight transfer).

Your not talkng the "tail of the dragon" are you? There is a place kinda near me that the Z club around here, or i should say their, run a length of road called that. Just wondering?
Back on topic: I say do what you feel comfortable doing, if for you faster is drift and you feel more at ease that way then do it, if grip is up your alley, the grip it? its up to the driver imo
