The D in the Nissans engine codes means DOHC, if I remember correctly. A former nissan owner, now a toyota owner, so im a little rusty. Thats why the KA24E meant SOHC, and KA24DE meant DOHC.

I know Nissan's engine code, i know plenty (read: too much!) about Nissan. I know every little thing bout the GTR Silvia and so on. I asked bout the Toyota. But neways thank you everyone for your help, i now see that there are people who really do know what their talking about!
      heh, my bad.

This site might help you out a bit:

      http://club4ag.com/faq%20and%20tech_...ison_chart.htm

The only thing I disagree with is their definition of the "U" engine code as "universal." I learned it meant the engine had an O2 sensor, so it required "unleaded" fuel. But I guess its just semantics...

      edit: also found this:

Corolla GTV/Sprinter GTV liftback- a more upscale GT

Corolla GT Apex/Sprinter GT Apex coupe/liftback- the plushest, sportiest AE86 of all.

At any rate, it doesn't matter as the US did not get the GTV or GT-Apex. Just the SOHC, rear drum-braked SR5, or the DOHC, rear disc-braked GTS.

By the way, if I remember correctly, both trim levels of Corolla are AE86s. That's what it says on the firewall or whatever. However, the SR5 is refferred to as AE86 and the GT-S as AE88 on the VIN number. So a GT-S would be like "JT01AE88.....etc" (I just guessed at JT01, btw, not sure what the man. code for toyota is, I know maz is JM01 and nissan is JN01)

The actual AE88, by the way, IIRC, is the 4dr Corolla DX of the same generation.

              GT-V = Basic Trueno/Levin
              GT-Apex = Higher quality/better Trueno/Levin
              GT-S = American version

i think that's right.....if not my bad. lol.

when people refer to "hachi roku" what they realy mean is eight-six, as in it was made in the year 86.

Wow, you are a newb also. I don't know where you got that info from but AE86, or hachi roku, stands for the chassis code. Sorry man.
