CAR and DRIVER Favors GTO Over All Other Drift Cars

    Usually I find C&D to be fairly informational although biased. But with all the hubbub over the GTO, it's like the editors' wet dreams over their youthful years with GTOs, 'stangs, and camarros. I love cars before I start having to pick sides, but I hope that they realize this cinderella muscle car is a HOLDEN MONARO before it's anything domestic

    power to the 'roos.

      took the words right out a my mouth i know gm owns Holden but its still an Aussie ride and last time i checked austrailia wasnt pat of the us, now is is.

        Well I'm gonna give them the same treatment I gave Rado. I dont think they've Driven or compared enough D1 drift cars to even know what they are talking about. Sorry C&D.

          even tho holden is part of GM, it is still an aussie car (except for the ones holden import)

          it intresting to see how in the US as with here the more 'established' motoring people (be it magazines or comintators) are never to excited about jap cars, domestics usualy get all the praise. if u pick up most motoring magazines in Australia u will see praze for the holdens and aussie made and designed fords (XR8s and what not)

          i think it is a mentality where these people dont want these up n comers driving jap cars beating domestic V8s, hell ive seen articals bagging turbos yet the same writers praised the xr6 turbo (v6 turbo, absolute beast of a car)

          then again in a lot of the import car mags they do bag the Domestics, yet not to the same degree

          this just my view from here, i imagine it much the same as there, as our domestics are quite similar (big v8s)

          EDIT: just thought id add, back in 91,92 our major racing champion ship (we only have 1 big one) was dominated by the r32 GTR, well since then they changed the rules to N/A RWD v8s, just an example of a lot of the established motoring people getting scared by the domestic v8s being beet

              oh man, I hate it when big name magazines try to make an article and sound smart on a subject the know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about. the reason for the better handeling is because drift setups aren't meant for complete uncontrolled slides as they think. the setup are actually made with getting maximum grip and responsibility in mind. it isn't surprising a lot of the D1 cars are also good grip racing cars as well. D1 cars are made to have a neutral feeling about them and some cars are serup to have just a hint of understeer as well.

                Thats why i liked the Hot Rod mag artical so much.. it was very honest about the less then american orgins of this beast they call the GTO. They were very open to drifting too. Said something along the lines of, Even the most harded redneck has to admit its a hell of a show.

                Like i said, i think Hot Rod mag are wrote by guys who just truely enjoy cars so they enjoyed drifting.

                  I think we have to understand first where this people are coming from. Most of the people in the US are biased towards NASCAR/NHRA types of racing. They should, because those are the 2 most popular kind of motoring events in the US.
                  Now, since most of these people have loyalty to domestic marques, there should will be some rejection towards drifting (and other non-US based motorsport).

                  This people grew up with camaros, lusting V8's, trying to squeeze every last HP their small block chevy had so they could shave their E.T. Now, there's nothing wrong with that, but it makes a sport such as drifting hard to understand for them. For most of the people in the US how quick (not fast) a car is what really matters. In drifting ultimate HP numbers are not necessary, but controlled grip. They dont understand that. They see drifting as making huge powerslildes with no control. Let me remind you that, most of them had live axle equipped cars with poor suspension design.

                  Now, I wouldnt get so upset about such articles. We are the people that are changing this country. We believe there is something better and different out there for us to do. We are discovering what the rest of the world knows; great chassis, great engines, sick engine swaps, technology in every aspect of a car, etc. The japanese are leaders in tuning, and we are taking notes and learning.

                  Now, let's hope someday everybody opens their eyes to what we currently see and acknowledge.

                  So, drift and grip away towards your car dreams.

                      you can bet there will be a BUNCH of pontiac GTO ad in their magazine in the months to come.

                      its just magazine politics. car and driver is for office dads and housewives.
