The Viper's Tube Frame should be illegal... Sorry... That's just my opinion. It might be stock but that's like the L.A. Lakers buying their championship trophy by buying players like Karl Malone... Rediculous... I hope they loose, they are soo close to loosing...

Well he keeps his stuff not known to the public. Anyways, that's what the Modified Forumula Drift Guide said in an interview. Wow that stuff is actually pretty meaningful

I'm not saying his modifications on his car costs 25,000. I'm saying it costed his team more than that, but he could reproduce it for that much. He didn't do just headwork. He did so much suspension, brakes, etc... That car is definitely more modified than the Viper...

          Pikes Peak Hillclimb 2004

Well, here is the drift GTO all dirty from the hillclimb.

Looks like they came in 3rd in class:
          Class G5
          Pos I/C 3
          Car 33
          Driver Rhys Millen
          CoDriver Chrissy Beavis
          Overall Time 32:58.6
          Diff Leader +46.9

          http://www.rally-america.com/Update/...day_index.html

Sat 26-Jun-04 11:24 Car 33, Millen / Beavis blew a power stearing pump on the third turn but seems to have continued to the top.

Sat 26-Jun-04 12:30 The Drifter cars left to drift up the hill, they will go up to the Picnic Grounds and drift back down hill.

The rally cars and the rest of the competitors will be heading back down to the pit area shortly.

Sat 26-Jun-04 12:45 Report from the top of the mountain, IT'S SNOWING!
          Sat 26-Jun-04 15:24 A shot of the "W"s post snow/hail. Don't fall off!

hes not being conservative at all, its a strategy that i first saw him implore at Laguna Seca. And it has nothing to do with power but rather weight. Gushi and Fixmer cars are not monsters but they are not underpowered either..

See Rhys' biggest disadvantage is his weight. Even with 800 lbs dropped off the car he still weighs 300 lbs more then a stock S13. However his strategy is simple. When leading go in slow. break traction with your power, not weight transfer then use the momentum of your heavy car to slide you threw. Lighter cars cant carry a slow drift that long. Furthermore They dont expect to go in slow, thats against there drifting instinct.

Lets say your gushi.. gushi style is fast seems to use alot of weight transfer for his first drift. Your behind the GTO you come in fast, he comes in fast, suddenly he brakes hard. Early.. you brake to match him. Instead of going into the drift he waits, because hes too early. you loose your momentum, and your weight transfer technique. Suddenly he pitches the car early pressed down and uses the thick torque curve to break traction. His massive weight carries him threw excellently. You on the other hand now have to pitch your car.. Now your car isnt underpowered but its a 2 liter turbo, So you dont enter it as smooth.. Further more your car probably weighs under 2500 lbs. Giving you alot less inertia to carry this less then steller drift.

You go side by side against the GTO though not as smooth, this slow style is alien to you.. he exits a smooth drift punches the gas and takes off with his big power to the next turn. You exit it punch the gas, and follow him.. Now a car like Gushi's isnt slow. but its still not as impressive as the GTo whos covering you with smoke.

You clear the smoke, aproch the next turn and the bastard does it again!

You can see this isnt a conservative style, its a strategy to turn his biggest weakness into his biggest strength. Rhys is a very smart driver, and one hell of a clever guy to come up with it.

I saw him use this strategy again and again to shame every driver he went up against at laguna seca. Only gushi was able to stop him and gushi did it by matching his moves the best he can then enter the Andretti hairpin faster then any race car i saw that day So fast that the heavy GTO simply could not match the speeds safely.

A good strategy but not unbeatable obviously.

Rhys is a hell of a driver, and a hell of a strategist, And hes impressive to see. this is no longer the clumsy car and driver combination we saw at the D1, but rather a real competitor whos unique style is a threat to all other drifters who can not adapt.
jeez nissan guy, u realli know your stuff. amazing and i think that rhys millen's pontiac is a monster.

however, he only competes in the latest incarnation of it. i spent alot of time at FD in houston talking to Rhys and Sam talking about their cars since i used to do a little wrenching on both motors and even when Rhys was pissed drunk, he told me it was just an LS6 heads and cam.

                  Rhys wears some nice clothes...

There's an article in Hot Rod magazine this month about the GTO and what went in to making it (there's also the most badass Camaro ever in the new issue).

The GTO has essentially been stripped down to bare shell and then tweaked from there. Even if it had an unmodified motor and LSD the GTO would still rock. Sure the modified steering rack adds a lot of angle, but you can drift cars with less angle. Rhys is a very skilled driver and his car suits him just as well as anyone else's car suits them.

                  Regarding the tangent topic:
I don't understand why people say the Viper should be illegal - everyone has the same opportunity to build a tubeframe. A RHS (Rectangular Hollow Section) frame can be built for less than a grand - or for free with sponsors - once it's designed, and then everything just bolts right up. If you've ever seen the frame of the stock Viper, you can see that its virtually a tubeframe that has been modified to meet safety standards. Yeah, tube frames can withstand higher torsional loads than unit-body structures, but what makes them so great for competition is that everything is right there and there's no extra crap that you don't need.

IMO, I'd much rather see unit-body cars than tubeframe one-offs in D1 and Formula D because I don't want either of them to turn into NASCAR, but at the same time if I wanted to be competitive, I would build a tube or RHS car as well.

EIther car can be driven on the street as long as they have all trhe requisite lights - it's not like it's illegal to drive a tubeframe car around town.
