    seriously, who are the competition organizers for california based drift events, and where can i find the list of rules regarding car build up and such things.

    I'm detective John Kimbal, I'm a cop you idiot! No but seriously, do you mean like professional competitions only? Because there are a lot of grass roots types of events, and then there are a few that are "pro."

      It's the same rules as autox practices.

      and there's some private practices all over the state. It's usually held by shop owners and other enthusiast.

        Regulations
        Event sanctioned by D1 Grand Prix USA Safety Modifications and Guidelines:

        Updated May 20th, 2004

        For all D1 Grand Prix USA and Driver Search Events:

        1. The removal of any safety equipment that may compromise the safety of the vehicle in a collision will not be permitted. The only exceptions are:

        a. collision reinforcement bars
        b. air bags
        c. anti lock brakes
        d. traction control
        e. active stability management systems

        2. Drivers seat must be equipped with three mounting point or better racing type safety harness of nylon web, at least 3 inches in diameter, with a metal buckle. Shoulder harness must be an H type not Y type harness. Safety Harness must be securely bolted to the frame.

        3. Drivers must be fitted with Snell Foundation (SA) approved safety helmets with 1995 Snell Foundation (95SA) or later safety sticker of approval displayed inside; head and neck restraints systems are optional and must also be Snell Foundation (SA) approved. Face shields are strongly recommended.

        4. Catch tanks must be installed and securely fastened. Radiator catch tanks must have a minimum capacity of 1 qt. each. Oil catch tanks may also be installed on engine oil breathers where practical. NO FLUID LEAKS OF ANY KIND WILL BE TOLERATED.

        5. It is highly recommended that all cars be equipped with at least a 2 lb. 10 BC fire extinguisher securely mounted in the cockpit.

        6. Master electrical cut-off switches are highly recommended and should clearly be marked if fitted outside the vehicle.

        7. Competition use approved fuel cells are strongly recommended. (Not required)

        8. Fuel filler caps must be securely fastened so as not to open on impact.

        9. All hoods and deck lids must be adequately and securely fastened.

        10. All drain plugs must be securely fastened.

        11. Batteries must be securely fastened down, positive terminals well insulated and if located in the cockpit must be covered or have leak proof caps.

        12. All cars must have working rear brake light and turn signals.

        13. Brake systems including brakes, lines, fluid and pedals must be in good shape and working condition.

        Authorized Modifications:

        1. Each car must maintain the OEM uni-body structure, pipe frame extensions and replacements are not allowed.

        2. Must maintain DOT glass front windshield.

        3. Every car must maintain a complete exhaust system with a factory or aftermarket catalytic converter. High flow catalytic converters are acceptable. Some venues may require maximum allowable sound level restrictions. In such case, all cars must meet the venue specific noise regulations.

        4. ALL Tires must be DOT approved with a minimum tread wear rating of 120. No DOT-R Allowed

        5. Aftermarket body panels, bumper covers and wings are permitted

        6. Seam welding the uni-body is permitted.

        7. Suspension upgrades are allowed.

        8. Factory wheels may be replaced with aftermarket wheels.

        9. Any grade of automotive gasoline may be used for fuel.

        10. Brake bias modifications and controllers.

        11. Engines are open for modification or replacement.

        12. Other than what is listed above cars are open for modification.

        For all D1 Grand Prix USA - Points Round and Exhibition Match Events the following additional requirements must be met.

        1. Each car must be equipped with a six-point or better roll cage. Full front A pillar beams are required as well as door impact protection beams.

        2. Functional tow hooks must be installed on both front and rear of vehicle

        3. Roll cage must be welded or securely bolted and anchored. If roll cage is bolted then its must be securely reinforced with an anchor plate and backing plate sandwich on each side of the floor pan.

        4. Roll cage may be placed in front or through the dashboard.

        5. Roll cage tubing must be at a minimum of 1.5 inches OD tubing and no thinner than 0.098 wall mild steel or 1 .25x .083 Chromoly tubing.

        6. Drivers must wear driving suits made of approved fire resistance material (Nomex, Kynol, etc.) in single or double layers.

        7. Socks and full length underwear must also be fire resistance.

        8. Drivers must wear fire resistance gloves with no holes composed of Nomex or leather. Shoes must be of fire resistant materials or leather on top. Racing shoes are strongly recommended. [May 20th, 2004 END]

        Event sanctioned by D1 Grand Prix USA Safety Modifications and Guidelines:

        Anything that compromises the safety of the vehicle in a collision may not be removed with the exception of air bags and or factory collision reinforcement bars. Exept for anti lock brakes, traction control, and active stability managment systems.

        Each car must be equipped with a six-point or better roll cage.

        Factory wheels may be replaced with aftermarket wheels.

        Any grade of automotive gasoline may be used for fuel.

        Engines are open for modification.

        Other than what is listed above cars are open for modification.

          (Rules in effect November 2003 and through 2004 and may change at any time)

          Safety Guidelines | Technical / Safety Standards | Downloads

          I.Course and Venue Safety Rules and Standards

          A) Attendance to the Driver’s Meeting held at the start of each day is MANDATORY. If a driver fails to attend the driver's meeting, he or she will not be allowed to drive.

          B) Drivers arriving after driver check-in deadline time on the date of the event will not be allowed to run, nor be refunded for any incurred driver entry, admissions and/or tech inspection fees.

          C) Passenger Rules are enforced accordingly at each event and will be conditionally changed per event and during the course of the day. In no circumstances will a passenger be allowed in car during a “competition” event.

          D) Any person or persons behaving in a manner deemed unsafe or engaging in acts of aggression as defined by track officials, hosting entity and/or venue staff, will be removed from premises without refund.

          E) Refueling is prohibited in paddock and grid and is applicable to all cars, tools, or generators.

          II.Driver conduct and regulations of the venues, and course.

          A) Drivers are required to obey all orders, commands and requests signaled to or communicated by other methods by “officials” of the Venue, Course and Track Officials.

          B) “5 Miles per Hour” speed limit in paddock, grid and all areas accessible by the drivers that are not part of the competition or practice designated course. No drivers shall be allowed to proceed onto any course until directed by a starter signal.

          C) Flag rules must be obeyed and observed as signaled.

          D) In case of a collision, malfunction, other reasons of inability to move the car while on course, the driver is asked to wait in the car with seatbelts and helmet worn until directed or assisted by course marshal (exception to this rule will be any pending or visible fire, chemical hazards that threaten the driver).

          E) Driver’s side windows must be closed while on course, or protected by approved safety nets if no windows exist.

          F) Drivers must not tamper, assist or offer use of tools to another car without the respective owner or driver’s consent.

          III.General Competition Rules and Guidelines (Competitions Only)

          A) Drivers must stay on course, and any 2 wheels off the course will result in no score.

          B) Contact with course bordering objects will not be penalized but will incur the cost of repairs on the venue if damaged

          C) Driver changes and car changes are not allowed.

          D) Mechanical failure or personal injuries after the start of competition rounds will not be eligible for replacement of car or driver entry.

          E) Ignorance or violation of event rules will result in immediate disqualification, and in certain circumstances, removal from the event and premises.

          F) Tampering with other participant cars will be grounds for disqualifications and removal from venue.

          G) Cars must keep a minimum of 5 car length distance margin while in practice sessions; this rule is removed in competition.

          H) Contact with another car will result in “following” or trailing car with no score, as determined by starting position.

          I) Multi-car contact will be resolved by “fix own car only” rules. No exceptions.

          J) Contact with course borders will result in no score.

          IV.Additional Rules

          A) Additional Rules specific to the event and/or venue may be enforced in addition to these regulations. Please check the official event page for the additional requirements.*

          *These preliminary rules may change at any time so please check back before each event to make sure you are equipped to attend and enjoy the day informed and in a safe as possible way.

          Technical Inspection and Vehicle Safety Standards

          PRE TECH INSPECTIONS - (MANDATORY) only if you live within 25 miles of Los Angeles Area. Pre tech inspections are preformed free of charge at the locations below:

          Please pre-check yourself in such case to ensure you can pass the inspections in the morning.

          A) Basic Standards for Single Competitions and Practice, Open Track and Schools

          1. At least 2 spare tires (no one will be allowed to run with "temporary spare" tires or tires with no tread left)

          2. Brake pads must have more than 25% of original condition.

          3. Brakes must be properly bled and all seals in good condition, pedal and linkages must be free of excessive wear, play and malfunction or missing parts.

          4. Snell SA95, MA95 or newer rating approved helmet (drivers and passengers where allowed) NO LOANERS AVAILABLE.

          5. Remove floor mat, loose items.

          6. Remove all hubcaps and cosmetic trim from all wheels.

          7. Seatbelts must be properly attached and in good working order, or aftermarket racing harness of at least 4 points attached to the chassis by methods approved by manufacturer, and must meet racing use requirements.

          8. Throttle linkages and cable, pedals must be in good working order.

          9. Steering linkages must be in good order.

          10. Brake lamps must be operational.

          11. All lug nuts tightened to 80ft/lbs torque, with at least 4 turns on thread, and present at all studs on the hub.

          12. Suspension parts, modifications checked for proper installation.

          13. Windows and windshields must be free of cracks or breaks over 1" in length, or 0.5 inch in diameter.

          14. All body panels must be present, and secured by fasteners.

          15. Rear wings, spoilers and other aerodynamic or cosmetic additions must not protrude over 2 inches over the overall width of the vehicle.

          16. Tires must have over 3/32 of an inch tread left on the tires and compound tread wear rating must not be under 100. (No race compound tires allowed.

          17. All convertibles / open top / soft top cars must have roll bars equal or exceeding 4 points from unibody or sub frame.

          18. Tow hooks must be present on at least one location on vehicle.

          19. 1979~1987 Toyota Corolla (E70~E86) Corolla RWD with front roll center adjusters must have adapter bolts tightened to 55ft/lbs and meet required tensile strength. Front tension rods and rear lateral bars must not be bent.

          20. Converted Nissan 200SX/240SX (S12/S13/S14) with SR20/RB25/RB26 must have all intake channels, intercoolers and piping secured to the frame.

          B) B) Additional Rules when Tandem / multiple car driving are scheduled during competitions and practice.

          1. Approved Nomex™ material full length racing suits are required.

          2. Approved Nomex™ material fire resistant gloves and shoes are required.

          3. Approved 4 point Drift Association LLC approved, "occupant protection bars” or approved 6 point roll cages with door-side impact protection beams are required and installed by approved methods.

          4. Helmets must be rated and no older than SNELL MA/SA 2000, or FIA 2000

          5. Fire extinguishers installed in unlocked portion of the cabin, secured in approved manner.
