If I was going to mod my car, i like drifting but i would want to balace it out. Like a few of you said, everyones way of modifying will be different. Me being someone who likes speed and acceleration, I would not be able to wait for performance. Whether it would be a big or small upgrade, i personally would have more fun with a car that was partially modded for drifting and partial race. A stock 240sx has decent speed, but it is not suiting for many, including me. Doing the quarter mile in high 15s is not what i am looking for and pulling up to a trans am or mustang on the streets, i want to be able to give them a run! My point is that even if it drifts good, having a car that can be beat by a civic hatch is no accomplishment.

The driver. Why upgrade your car, if you can't even understand your own car on stock form? If you upgrade, before knowing your car how would you know you did the right upgrade?

Yes I know how to drive. Im 23.
I've been driving since 15 (this is before the provision driving until 18, law)
Yes "the Driver" is a good investment before anything else.
You know why no one can determine a general rule when it comes to upgrading? It's because it's a personal preference.
Determining where the breaking point of traction and drivers ergonomic is the first step.
You want to contribute, keep your assumption to yourself. Also, do you think it's not possible to drift or race a factory stock car?
Just for the sake of this thread, I would say a good bucket seat and a harness is a good first upgrade when it comes to driving fast and especially drifting. It keeps you safe, sugged and well incontrol of the steering wheel, when you're pushing your car to its limits.

I don't think he was directing that comment toward anyone in particular, I know I wasn't. But it seems to be an assumption in the drifting community that getting drift parts makes drifting easier. That is not the case "and I SELL drift parts". What aftermarket mods do is help someone who knows what they are doing do it BETTER. I'm not saying that anyone specific doesn't know what they are doing but I feel it's necessary to make this point to the noobs that may be reading this thread, that's all.

Let me also say that the reason, even though I'm in the business of selling drift parts, that I will not tell someone "this will make you able to drift" like some places do. The reality is that NO part will "make you able to drift". I would rather be honest than sell someone a part they are going to be disapointed in because it did not suddenly give them the ability to pull a drift off.

CRASHDRIVE you missed my post completely. Let's just say that after 20 years of drifting your stock car to the point where you can do it blindfolded, what would be the best first upgrades? That is what I'm looking for. And I'm not looking for a general rule just a list of what should be done first. Some will say LSD, others will say Racing seat, and others will say something else. This is why a list of the best first upgrades would be great. I'm not asking "What's the best drifting upgrade?". For example what's a better first upgrade? A catback exhaust or a set of stiffer springs and better shocks. I would say the suspension therefore put that in my list of upgrades.

The VERY first thing you need to do is get a seat and a harness. First off, your control will improve twice over as you can now feel everything better and stay in one spot. Also, you cannot run any events without this mod. So you may as well get it out of the way. Second mod would be an LSD.
All of this is AFTER you make sure your car can make it to and from the track without breaking down. You really need to make sure that you are not leaking any fluids. Some tracks will shut you down right there.
This thread is kind of strange. The other thread that was referred too at the beginning was too in depth for noobs but then you want it referred to as everyone has gotten their car to the level of perfection needed to start modding. Doesn't work that way.
If anyone reads any post, read JBoss's.
Mods to do first----in order of importance
1--make sure car is safe
2--repair car so that it is in like-new running condition
3--drive car as is until you can drive it completely comfortably
4--modify as you can afford to starting with the items that will yeild the most FUN per Dollar spent.
I'll give you a hint as to what will give you the most fun per dollar spent----tires, driving school (they are expensive but still super high on fun per dollar--heck with a good 3 day driver school ($1000-2000), you can show up ALL of your buddies with $4000-$10,000 in nearly useless mods, proper springs and dampers---not this lowering road weenie crap either, LSD, Shorter final drive---usually overlooked, etc etc etc..
Dont forget the free mods---lighten the car, play with tire pressures etc etc
This is the best info you can get. A Driving school is number one. Alot fo 16 year olds are trying to get into this sport and they are really not even comfortable with driving normally. You have to remember that Drifting is all about car control. If you can't control it under normal driving conditions, how can you control it while it's seemingly out of control? Learning the basics from someone that knows how to drive and do it well will help you out more than any midnight runs through the neighborhood. That crazy stuff in Initial D when he got in the 85 and whipped those guys in the tuned car, well that stuff happens in real life. That is the difference between someone who can drive and someone who can DRIVE. So be the ball and get some training. You'll be 10 times better for it.
