Every year the J-Cup series here has a two day drift event. The first day is the typical individual competition which we weren't able to attend. On Sunday was the annual area battle where your points go towards your prefecture.
As this is a Western Japan series the teams were representing Okayama, Hiroshima, Shimane, Tottori, Hiroshima, and Yamaguchi.
Kawabata and Munetou were driving for Okayama of course but unfortunately I wasn't able to compete as my new R32 isn't done yet. However, it gave me the time to take plenty of video of the event.
In Japan drivers are typically separated into Beginner, Middle, and Expert classes. We (Okayama Union) had a good turn out when it came to expert class with:
- Kawabata (Driving Sports One-Via)
- Takeshi (V-Factory C35 Laurel)
- Yakushiji (NK Company S14)
- Sato (Skid Line One-Via)
- Yoshioka (S13 Silvia K's)
Unfortunately Yoshioka (D1GP) ended up not competing and doing commentary up in the control tower with the judges Fujio and Kamimoto. Unfortunately with me being on the sidelines our only middle class driver was Munetou but he ended up doing really well and taking up some of the slack from the beginner class drivers. We also had a problem with the actuator in the One-Via causing boost to be limited to .7bar max but Kawabata did pretty well despite the lack of power.
All the other prefectures were represented well except for Yamaguchi who only had one Expert class driver and a very good one at that. The rest of their small team was made up of Beginners. They had the longest haul to get to Bihoku though so the small turnout was understandable.
The event consisted of 4 ''heats'' for each team. Each heat consisted of a section of the track. Basically you would go out on the course with your team and each driver would get two shots at a group of turns starting with 1 and 2. Then you move on to 2-4 and so on and so on. It's a very fun event at a typical competition at Bihoku you only get judged on turns 1-4. In the end Okayama came in second behind Hiroshima and Takeshi was our top driver.
After the team competition ended every prefecture's top driver went head to head. They got two shots at connecting the entire course. As soon as Hiroshima's driver started his run a storm started rolling in so it got dark and lightning started coming down with rain threatening. I have to say it was probably the coolest drift experience of my life and I wasn't even driving. All the drivers were going all out with lightning flashing in the background. Unfortunately my battery died so I didn't get it on film.
