FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Drift Atlanta
May 13, 2009 (Signal Hill, Calif.) – For the second time this year, Kyle Mohan wheeled his beautifully-prepared 2009 Mazda RX-8 at a Formula Drift Pro Championship event. With plenty of updates in place after a strong showing at the first round on the Streets of Long Beach and a second place in FD Team Drift, Mohan was confident of a stronger showing at Drift Atlanta.
Fresh off the trailer, the car ran great and Mohan received good feedback and praise for his line, angle, and speed throughout the difficult Drift Atlanta course.
“We were really pumped after practice on Thursday and Friday,” said Mohan. “I was getting more and more confident in the car, and was able to really push it and the car responded very well. The level of grip was a surprise to us, but the car was planted well and our larger rear Cooper Tires were hooked up and making great smoke.”
At his first pass for qualifying, Mohan entered with high speed and great angle, putting down a strong run as he headed for the horseshoe. However, as he came around the horseshoe, the engine suddenly lost power as a result of a ignition system problem. Mohan limped back to the pits and feverishly worked to repair the car, but was unable to do so before the time came for his second run, sidelining him for the rest of the event.
“It was a disappointing end to the weekend, especially after how strong the car was in practice,” said Mohan. “But we will repair the car and be back just as strong for the next round at Wall Speedway. Thanks again to Mazda USA, Mazdatrix, Cooper Tire, and the rest of our partners for all of their support this weekend – I will get a better result next time!”
Since he would be unable to compete on Saturday, Mohan was a guest on The Inside Drift’s live show at Drift Atlanta, offering some commentary on the weekend and on his team as well as taking the opportunity to plug his sponsors.
