a tachometer is a way to measure engine speeds.
an aftermarket tach is only used to make it easier to see or if the redline has changed
redline is the peak of the motors functional limits. go above the redline too long and your motor just might blow up
rpms are revolutons per minute and measure how many times the flywheel spins in one minute
glad to help

Most of the aftermarket tachs have another cool feature with them, they tell you when to shift indicated by a yellow/red light, you can also manually set the shift points. It help alot, you can pay more attention to the road this way. But personally, I shift by the engine sound.
