early models had one, 1 in mind has 3, hell a awesome one had 4 rotors.. USUALLY they have 2.
To be blunt: Rotarys have rotors, think of big giant metal triangles, these metal triangles rotate inside the engine- thus a rotary.
Added: Yaaa, just look at this- this is a rotor engine, the housign has been removed obviously though so you can see what happens inside.
The rotor spins, as it does it reveals a port- the spinning action will suck in the air/fuel mixture, then the port will be covered by the rotor and sealed off. This air/fuel is compressed as the rotor spins, at which point 2 spark plugs (firing one just after the other) will ignite the mixture, this explosion expands and continues to spin the rotor, as the rotor continues to spin it uncovers another port, which the detonated fuel (Exhaust) is forced out, and the process continues again. Each side of the rotor acts like its own "cylinder".
Inside of that rotor (where the big hole is) would be the esentric shaft, think of a crank shaft in a normal piston engine. One full spin of the rotor spins that shaft 3 times, good stuff.
Unlike the piston engine which has to change directions (up and down) the rotor just spins in one constant direction, so theyre pretty rev free and have good throttle response. Theyre also pretty small and compact (though not overly light weight haha) which allows them to be moutned very low, and back giving good weight distribution. The Fd for example is a -type- of mid-ship car because the engine is actually behind the front wheels.Last edited by SidewaysGts; 12-20-2004, 04:28 PM.
