Well, if you are not driving yet, you may consider playing a game called Enthusia for the PS2. Its about the most realistic drifting simulator you can get for cheap. Mind you the real thing and this are still worlds apart. Nonetheless, Enthusia has a G ball, which is a nice feature, and makes it easier to tell how smooth you are. With a good wheel its kind of like a flight simulator, good for an idea, but it really should complement some real driving.

As for a cheap car, just look around that question has been answered ad nauseum. I don't know anyone in the Tampa bay area myself, but look around as I am sure there are some tracks in your area. You may even consider joining the SCCA.

Ai, I have recently heard about this game being very good, but I have yet to play it. Nonetheless, video games can make some good practice, but they are no replacement for real practice ^_^

While I agree this is also a very good option, the guy does not know anyone, so I am providing an alternate option.

Dont be so quick to WTF, after all, every professional pilot needs to have clocked time on a flight simulation system. While this isn't the same exact thing its a good laymans introduction to auto physics. Many of the techniques I know I was using in video games long before I ever thought to try them IRL. While it is QUITE a transition, I still think that knowledge has benefited me positively.

Mind you, you should still build yourself up slowly, driving simulators are not direct translations. They generally don't take added body roll into account (due to age and use of the car), not to mention part failures do not occur. Plus simulators are consequence free as well.
