Personally I would rather rock a 5.0 Fox body, just because it's going to be easier and cheaper to tune and fix, but the turbo 4's were very cool. I'm trying to remember if they had IRS, or just different factory setup then the 5.0's.
I see no obvious reasons to be biased against Ford or the Mustang, and silly prejudices have no place in this discussion so you can forget that.
The Starion is very cool, but a breakdown machine and no one is denying that. Other then that bucket or an AWD Talon/Eclipse (which are VERY quick for short money, good handling, and not unreasonably problem prone cars) I'm not really sure what you would use for drifting that's DSM. In fact, I'm not even sure why you're talking about them as I don't believe they were mentioned once, and I've never heard of them being overly bad in crashes...
I will let one of the rotor heads argue with you about those motors. It's well known they like to run hot, and have other weakpoints, but they're not the devil. The RX-7 is a great handling car with the potential to be fairly quick (NA) or a rocket sled (turbo).
The 86 is ok...if you can find one not rusted to crap (nearly impossible around here) for a reasonable price. Way too many Takumi's are all about them, and the market for them is simply unreasonable. For the money spent you can get a cleaner, younger, faster Mustang then you ever will 86.
Would you like your 2 cents back now?
