Grey fox body mustang in the line at Jack in the Box about 4 years ago. I got no clue what was in there, but when he started it up to move forward in line it set off all the car alarms across the street and I almost had a heart attack since I wasnt expecting it.
a couple years back, they had the mellow yellow NASCAR at one of our outdoor car shows. 8 open pipes from the block flowed to both sides of the car just behind the front wheels. That thing was the loudest car i've ever heard.
on the street, a local shop owner has a 69 yenko Camaro with a supercharged 540ci motor with twin exhausts. that thing is still soo loud with resonators and exhaust. it blows the dirt behind it when its at idle. it made around 1100HP. sick as hell.
the loudest car i've personally ever heard wasn't a car... it was my '63 chevy p/u's v8 running open headers. i couldn't hear for the rest of the day when we broke the motor in.
Basically, the record for the loudest commercially available internal combustion engines bounced back and forth between a twin rotor rotary, peripheral port drag race car and a Chinook helicopter engine (which was used to power Hydro Plane boats for years).
Having run a drag race series for imports for a number of years, I can tell you that I believe the part about the rotary motors.
What confused me about that claim was that top fuel cars are clearly louder, so what gives?
cant forget my mom's old Ford Windstar van when the exaust system cracked about midway under the car. I rode in that car for 4 hours up to my cabin and my head hurt so freagin bad, i wanted to drive out the pain with a hammer. unfortunately there was no hammer to be found.
The loudest car I ever heard was a race-built Shelby Cobra at the Barrett-Jackson auto auction in Scottsdale, Arizona. When they turned on the car at the booth , I jumped cuz it was so loud. Scared the sh1t outta me. I couldn't stand to even be near that beast.
Loudest ive been around was a Viper that was at an Import show in Seattle. He cleared out the whole venue in a couple of minutes.
My car after the motor was rebuilt...no exhaust wasnt all that loud compared to sumthin like that Viper...but it was a disturbing knowing that my car could sound that way
