you need the (clear) title signed over to you and probably a bill of sale.

Don't buy a car without the title in hand.

Don't buy a car without getting it inspected by a good mechanic, unless you are confident in your ability to spot problems. No offense, but from your tech questions it sounds like you should probably get it checked out by someone.
