Im a sales manager in the food industry, er, um, ok actualy im a checker/boxer/freight handler/whatever at the grocery store I can do almost anyone elses job in the store and I dont crash the register terminals very often so I realy cant seem to get myself fired, oh well. In a few more months Im going to quit to go back to a Tech school to learn Computer aided drafting and design, hopefully followed by Computer aided machining. Hopefully somewhere along the way I hope to pick up casting and moldmaking and fiberlaying. A lot on my plate but imagine what I could do with those skills, not even thinking about the careers they could put me into.

You guys going into the Computer, IT, and tech fields need to be careful. American company's are shipping jobs over to India and the middle east like crazy. My father is about to lose his job to them.

I realise that and its realy unfortunate. Theres a lot of talent here in the us that needs the jobs. Computer aided design luckly doesnt fall under IT, it is more allong the lines of engineering it isnt imposible for a designer to work with a CADD person that is overseas but it is much easier for him to be standing right behind me explaning what they want as I try to turn their concept into a 3D modell. But Nothing is guarenteed anymore.

As for the jobs going to india, Dell did that a while back. I was a little pissed off to call dells tech support and get transfered to india. I mean the guy was nice enough, but he wasnt a techie. I want to talk to a real geek like myself who's "been there, broke that" so to speak. The guy in india could only follow the screen prompts of the support program on his computer. Half an hour later when the problem still isnt solved he sets up for me to send it in. ACK! I figured out the problem on my own a little later.

If its cheaper labor then why not. I doubt we would do some kind of stupid things like that here at Semiconductor.

If your dad took 7 dollars an hour they would keep him.

The problem with the rational of moving all of Jobs overseas is that with the movement of Jobs from Richer to poorer countries, it creates a lowest common denominator job market. Look at what happened when we lost all our manufacturing jobs overseas. Look at the industrial sections of cities such as Cleveland, Detroit, Baltimore, and Chicago. Things may be good for people in a service industry, but when a country doesn't make stuff, where does weath come from? This restricts upward social mobility, one of the cornerstones of American Life.

What i meant by the mentioning those cities is that look at what happend when manufacturing left major cities. Those major slums where created because those jobs left.

prices are already going up in indie for tech work, so the incentitive isnt as good as it was before, but its still a slow process and the only people this side of the pond who seem to be benefitting(sp) are the CEOs and upper level management that send jobs out of here, oh well.

First off, madmax, I live and work here in Cleveland and our tech industry went under because when our techies got enough money they'd leave Cleveland for sunnier climates coupled with the fact that our tech industry was based around serving the Cleveland industrial giant.

Unfortunately, save for the good news that International Steel Group has been bought up by an Indian steel magnate, making the world's largest steel conglomerate (and meaning our steel mills are going to be at full tilt production for the first time in 10-15 years) our industrial giant has shrunk considerably. Alcoa has lost Ford contracts and Ford has been idling the Brooklyn plant (though apparently the engines for the new Five Hundred are going to be built there). OglebayNorton, the company that runs the iron ore freighters, is seeking bankruptcy protection because of the down time the ships spent while Cleveland wasn't producing steel.

However, like I said, things are looking up on the steel end thanks to a combination of some rewritten tariffs (thanks G.W. for making Japanese steel expensive again) and the ISG buyout. For the first time in my life, the former LTV steel works, now a part of ISG, are building a new mill. Clevelanders know what hard times are, we're currently the poorest city in the nation, but we're clawing our way back out the same way we got in the hole - steel, iron ore, and determination.

By the way, in answer to the question, I'm a mechanic at a local shop here in town.

Belive me, I know. The issue with the Tariff is short lived, because GW screwed over the steelworkers by cowing to IMF pressure. Funny how he would not respect an international body thats stands for peace, but would gladly sell out american workers to the hounds of globalization.
