  • Pics of your cages???

I've been building road race cages for a while now, but I'm starting to get quite a few guys inquiring about drift cages for their RX's and 240's.

Anyone have pics of how their cages are set up? I would think that a drift car would want the stiffest chassis possible, but not TOO much triangulation/extra bars in order to keep the weight down.

Do you guys worry about too much weight in the back or is a stiffer rear worth the extra weight.

How much contact potential do you guys have?

It really depends. A lot of drivers jsut want to get the minimum possible- usually a bolt-in cage or bar is plenty for them. some of the harder- core formula D guys and gals go for a fully-integrated setup, almost NASCAR quality in some cases.

As for contact- most contact in drifting is light stuff by road race standards. unless you get into the wall. The potential is definitely there, espescially in twin drifting, which is probably why most of the guys youre getting in want to get cages- most (all?) sanctioning bodies require a cage to tandem.

99% of drivers will never need anythign mroe than a bolt-in cage that meets minimum reqs. somethign to protect them in a rollover and to prevent cabin-intrusion in the event of a side-on collision with a wall or tandem competitor, and something to provide that extra stiffness. lighter is better, as long as you're still safe, and you maintain the cars balance.

the formulda D rulebook has the exact specs, i know they require 6point with side bars. but i dont remember the thickness and bases.

i know for D1GP you have to have a 6 point with side impacts and it must be 1 1/4" x .98" tubing, which is really small and light. Im currently building a cage for my s13 that is going to be 6 point with a harness bar and stuff, im building mine from 1 5/8" x .120" tubng for better strength rigity and asthetics (1 1/4 look way retarded its so small) i'll post pics next week when im done with it

I remember the SCCA Tech for Formula D, in Sonoma, saying to consult him before building a new car. Hint probably ought to drop a call to find out any possible variations in the rulebook. As far as the cage, Bends, thickness according to weight, Use DOM tubing, Nascar bars and welds, passing through the firewall, it is in the SCCA's rulebook that each member gets.

Our cages were built three years ago according to those rules and were stamped by the tech for the SCCA to verify the build. We passed all techs D1 and FD. We were lucky since he lived in my area and wanted to build the cages$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

old pictures, the cage is painted as well as the car but thought this might help.

The x braces goe all the way behin the rear strut towers.

nobody likes the knee bar but it works.

          Car now
