  • How to make some power with a Miata

Hello all, I'm quite new here. I drive a '94 Miata (no pics yet, sorry) and it is my first RWD car. Problem is, the stock 1.8L is quite anemic (I used to drive a 160hp 2200lb Neon, so yes, the Miata is obviously slower)

I am planning on doing the standed I/H/E to hopefully free up some power, but it seems that the only way to make decent power with the Miata is boost or a seriouly built motor.

Does anyone know what are some simple yet effective bolt-ons I could buy? I'm planning on building my own intake since most of the ones on the market are expensive and still only replace the after-MAF section of the intake. As far as a good header, I think Jackson Racing makes one, and probably Racing Beat and Mazdaspeed... any others? I'll probably make up my own exhaust, too, to get the look and sound that I really want.

    Ben

go check out specmiata.com and read what guys who race miatas do to the car. there's a lot of stuff you can learn about cheap power and optimizing the engine. the miata is not an underpowered car. it's got the same power/weight as a hachi. look what the hachis can do.

spec miatas are prety much stock, as far as performance. in an entire field of spec miatas all the cars may only vary 5hp. it dose make a difference in a long race on a track, but some of their tricks are very expensive.
the turbo kits for those miatas are actualy very inexpensive, what you would spend on I/H/E you could almost buy a turbo kit, and those cars do respond well to boost

trust me. there's more than just 5whp difference between a well prepped car and the rest of the field. there are many little subtle FREE things to do to "optimize horsepower." there's a lot of very expensive things too, but it's worth reading.
