  • Response vs. torque?

read somewhere that HKS' spokesperson in Europe claimed that torque was alfa & omega when it came to tuning a drift car, I was slightly disturbed, I had always thought that (engine)response was the thing to crave... i guess HKS can afford both, but I can't (duh!).. what do you think is most important in a (street)drift car, engine-response or torque??

both you just can't have one with out directly effercting the other. But it is both you won't have a good drift car if you ust have torqe and visa versa.

      true...
more torque= easier power-over initiation, too little and i'll have to drive pretty constantly at high revs (should'nt really be a prob: FC3S, 13B-T), but if i miss at the revs it'll choke.... maybe it's just a choice-feeling thing...

Your confusion comes from "torque vs. response"... false premise. A torquey motor generally IS considered responsive. It's more like torque vs power. Of course they are mathematically locked into each other, but I'm talking about the common comparison of "low/midrange torque vs hi-rev power". NA motors are more responsive compared to turbo ones, but within the same type, a the "torquey motor" feels more responsive.

im assuming the response this thread is referring to is ability to get that power when you need it

it really depends on the situation, if your street drifting (which I dont condone) torque would be alot more helpful. under track conditions you REALLY nead both.

I agree with foilman, they are tied together, but I think its alot easier for large motor to make use of both, a VQ has both, a JZ has both, but a KA is more torquey(how the hell do you spell that) then responsive, and vice versa for SR.
4ags are definitely on the response side not the torque side.

its very hard to verbally explain the difference in feel between torque and horsepower. responsiveness kind of has to do with torque, but not necesarily. i've driven torquey motors that arnt responsive at all. I drove a SL600, and it was torquey as fcuk, but it wasnt responsive, maybe due to the automatic transmission it had. My GTI has the 2.8l VR6 and it has gobs or torque, when you step on the gas at virtually any rpm it really kicks you in the butt, but it does take a fraction of a second to go. My dads RX8 on the other hand has less torque, but when you get on the gas it kicks almost instantaneously, but not as powerfully. its hard to explain, but the bottom line is every motor is different and you just have to find one that respond the way you like it to.
