  • My Crappy (but new) tires are causing understeer

    Well i bought my car a couple days ago, and a plus to the car were the previous owner bought new tires for it.... problem is theyre pretty crappy... Wynstar Phazer R21 tires.. 205/60R/15 in size.... well anyways to the pont... with these tires the back end of my car grips better than the front , they like to cause the car to have understeer, and squeal easily.. and theyre not low on air either... im just wondering if later on when they wear down a bit, that it will grip better up front.. wanna know what you guys think. i do plan on getting new rims and good performance tires later on, but im a poor student so that wont be for a while..

    ill post some pics of the tires in a few minutes to show how the tread looks. They seem to be a harder compound tire, so that they last longer, but have less traction. im curious if it will get more traction later , cause theres not even 200 miles on these tires yet. little more on the back tires tho, and we all know why

    Hopefuly these tires will eventually grip better, so it will be more safe if i choose to go up the mountains on em.

      I doubt your getting understeer cause of crappy tires. Though I would really have to see and drive your car in order accuratly diagnoisis anything. Why not just rotate your fronts to the back and see if anything changes. Other then that I would suggest getting your front end aligned.

          Good link. You can work with tire pressures to tune the traction some. However, you only have a small range to gain or lose. I personally find a nice sticky set of tires makes a car easier to control. It allows higher limits in braking, steering, and acceleration which can make throwing your car around a bit easiler and sometimes safer.

          Being a stock production car, the suspension will be set up with understeer. That's a given, and there's not a whole lot you can do. Play with the tire pressures. Remove the stock front swaybar if it has one. Buy a set of sticky front tires and leave the current rear tires on. That's your options short of suspension work: new springs, swaybars.

          Also, technique can get you around your car's shortfalls. Vary your technique to compensate for the understeer.

            thanks alot guys! yeah im sure some of it is me not being totaly aquainted with the cars abilities yet, but its feeling better and better the more i drive it. once im totaly used to it, then ill start tuning little by little and get it where i want it. that link will help me a bunch too, thanks
