Originally posted by theflatlander if you want the ultimate apex seal you could go with Ianetti apex seals.
Stock Mazda is about $60 / each.
Atkins are $40 / each.
Rotary Aviation are $182 / set of 6.
Last time I checked, the Ianetti's were easily over $1,000 / set of 6.
For those who don't know rotary engines, you need 6 per engine.
Even with the stock Mazda seals, $360 is not bad compared to $1,600.
The Ianetti seals do not seal as well as the stock Mazda units.
The ceramic seals, when they do fail, will trash everything internally.
I wouldn't call them "ultimate".

Apex seals in the rotary engine is about as equivalent to piston rings in a piston engine.
They are used to seal the combustion chambers.
If they fail, you get low compression and a poorly running engine, if it does run at all.

isnt something thicker stronger??
Physics and engineering
its a flat piece of metal so I guess Just depending on the materials used
But if its the same materials ill use 3mm
There's a lot of misinformation regarding apex seal sizing. All a 3mm seal allows you to do, for a fact, is reuse old worn rotors. Everything else is a myth. While 3mm apex seals are thicker, they will only tolerate a few seconds more of detonation than the 2mm seals. The end result will still be a broken engine. Detonation can create pressures on order of 150,000 psi...1 extra mm is not going to save your seal. Your desire for durability needs to be addressed by the tuning, not the apex seal.
The negative aspect of the 3mm apex seal is weight. 3mm apex seals are known to have sealing problems at low revs and chatter at high revs. 2mm apex seals can actually net more power than 3mm, and in the hands of a good tuner the setup can last just as long.
