I believe they are the same chassis, but the GTS has lsd, and some other stuff the SR5 doesen't have, while the SR5 was the base model. I think this info is correct.

well...its not, lsd was an option on the gts,

on a side note they have diff drive train, motor/ rear end, same tranny, same chasis its the vin that is diff, sr-5 vin starts with ae86, gtsvin starts with ae88

the main things are that the sr5 has a crappy sohc carbuerated engine and rear drum brakes, unless you plan on swapping the engine stick with the gts

              SR5:
              Front engine, rear wheel drive
Rear drum brakes, carbed motor, open diff
Basically a commuter car that get good gas mileage, and is very reliable.

              GTS:
Twin cam TVIS operated 16V engine
              Close ratio manual transmission
              oil cooler
              Factory option limited slip differential
              7500 RPM redline
              Front and rear disc brakes
Stiffer suspension, thicker front and rear sway bars
Basically a commuter car chassis on crack. Has features on it that are usually reserved for "upper echelon" sports/race cars.

But yes, SR5 and GT-S both have the AE86 chassis.

whats the easy way of knowing the gts came with lsd? do you burn out and see if both tires rotated

I heard the SR-5 got crappy gas mileage, and carbed engines are very reliable?...If they were, why did they stop making them?...

SR5 gets better gas mileage, uses less gas and what not.

To find if you have LSD on an AE86

                            1. If the numbers T283 are located in by the VIN on the bottom right hand corner of the plate on the firewall, right after it says T50, the car was originally equipped with LSD, if it doesnt have that but has T282 instead, the car never came stock with LSD (taken from hachiroku.net techref)

                            2. Do a burn out and see if you leave two patches.

                            3. look under the rear of the car and look at the diff, there should be a sticker that says "LSD OIL ONLY" on the back of it.

                            4. You could take it apart to be 100% sure.
