welcome to the land of little or no after market.
Make sure you wanna be here, because it's a hard road to take.
Ok, so what do you do? First you gotta to try to drift it as is.
really. You have no idea how important this is. Just do it, don't ask stupid questions.
I would recomend these things at least.
Make sure it's not too rusty, drop some wieght, get thicker (stronger) springs, and look for some better shocks.
As far as the engine, just do general maintinance.
Plugs, wires, oil change air filter and possibly gaskets and hoses.
If it's still running, worry about it later.

The springs are easy, find some at a junkyard(that you uncle d).
Get thicker than what you got, with non tapered ends( the end should be as big as the center). the shocks can be a pain. every one will say they don't have shocks for your car. Just match them to something else they can get. they won't know the diffrence, and you'll get shocks.
after that, just take the car out again and enjoy!
It will feel alot better. and you'll drift real cheap too.

here's some shocks that will make it easier to find some.

    your front shocks will match-

Wow Soultron, nice info. I think maybe you should do a litle something for low aftermarket cars. Good info man.

        Not good info.

First of there is a big difference between the 85 to 87 and all other corollas as far as how they handle. No matter what you do to that 80 of yours, your still going to be behind. I should know, ive had at least a dozen 80 to 83 corollas and another dozen of 71 to 79 corollas.

For your suspension, everything off of the ae86 will fit except for the strut tops but a drill can fix that. You should use the ae86 struts and rear end since the front brakes are vented, and the rear has a larger ring and pinion, most of the time factory lsd, and rear disk brakes.

For your motor, the parts are getting harder and harder to find. You can make more hp cheeper with that 3tc then the 4ag but you will have the worse gas mileage in the world. Carbs and push rods are a thing of the past.

If your that much in love with your car and decide to build it up, they are alot of fun to play with but it can turn into a money pit fast. Words of advice from someone who played with those things for years.

Ok, I guess he could do all that too, but I'm just talking about doing things from a budget barebones perspective. I wasn't sure if he wanted to go pro or anything, just sounded like he wanted to have a little fun. If there's anything I know about it's being cheap. the corolla could be considered a money pit, but it's also
an opportunity to learn how to drive hard, and not blow thousands of dollars, just to find out you don't want to drift.

And by the by, twin webers are bad dass not matter if carbs are a thing of the past or not.

If you wanted to do it cheep, then you could just get a ae86 gts to start with stock.

ok, so for the sake of knowing, how much should I pay for a gts and where do you find one? What is your definition of cheap?
Can you buy and mod one for under 700 dollars? remember, we are talking about low level beginer stuff, not building a D1 car.
              Just a fun daily driver.
