Open Diff Drifters!

Yeah, I will never be able to afford an lsd so I have an open diff. I had one on my fc, that's the car I learned to drift in. Then I got a welded diff for it, didn't really see a difference. But yeah, my fc could not even do a donut. Now I have a 96 s14 and that also has an open diff. Don't you just love not being able to fully utilize the little horse power that you have. (I have a stock KA with 117,000 miles - I got beat by an old van on the highway). So I think an lsd would make a huge difference for me, but oh well. If and when I do get one though, it will be like the sweetest thing I ever got for my car.

no, its a clutch type LSD. its in my cressida. i'm sure i could get it to swing if i really worked it... but as far as just dumping the clutch and turning... not happening. the old LSD i just took out swung donuts really well... but i destroyed that rear end, so i put this junkyard one in. it drifts cool, but just won't swing. VLSD are junk. i had one in my S13... i hated it. clutch type is the only way to go, otherwise just weld the spider gears in an open diff...

My old truck had an open diff, first rwd drifter, lol. It was a pile but was fun to bash on. My current Subbie's full viscous.
There are differences in needs though, and it varies on what you're drifting on and your car setup. It becomes increasingly useful when running tighter, slower corners, and with a car with higher horsepower or with a car with a lot of body roll and the inside tire gets very light.
My old Ranger was rated at 70hp, probably put 50 to the ground. Even on gravel, I never had an issue with the open diff. In fact, the only time I ever had the inside tire wind up is say on a tight 30mph corner with the throttle pegged in 2nd gear. It would lean enough to basically lift the rear inside off the ground and spin up the tire. Beyond that, I don't think I'd ever notice the difference if it had a locking or open diff. ...now if it had the V6 in it instead, yeah, I would of had some power to work with and probably a better need for one.
