Basically you only need it if your foot is to big to heal toe it. Some cars I have to use it for, size 12, and other cars I don't.

Crosstrainers do well when it comes to driving.They're ,sleek,flexible,comfortable,not too wide,basiclly everything you'd want from a shoe.In other words,a shoe that you'd use for running is good for driving,or that's what I prefer anyways.
Back in the day these were my shoes.

alternatives
a good alternative to racing shoes or barefoot is a rock climbing/reef exploration shoe inserts they r a thin material with rubber soles warm and durable and quite grippy as well. I used these once i found out how much a pair of racing shoes was and i couldnt see anythign special about them other than the flame retardant qualities. on a similar topic how many of u wear gloves?

I don't wear gloves cuz usually I have a good steering wheel...but I hear the sparco gloves work really well and its has a loose grip...also I wear mechanics gloves and those really do help...especially when doing work on something that feels kinda hot u know...

yeah my steering wheel is quite good but when i rally drive its compulsory and like your feet i feel i sort of "lose" something thru the wheel with gloves on. I had a friend who used to rub surf board wax on his hands b4 he drifted cos he had a standard wheel i told him thats crazy. havent seen him for a while... wonder if i was right....

i want to get a pair of signal's racing gloves...i always wear mechanix gloves when working on car stuff. they help keep your hands clean plus they protect really well against cuts. im also about to get a pair of the ones with the kevlar cause a friend of mine has some, and they are awsome when cracking bolts off via breaker bar.

if you mean is it the fire proof materials, that is nomex...kevlar is the stuff they make bullet proof vests out of and that sort of stuff....kevlar is super strong stuff...wish they would make body kits out of it..then when you hit the curb, your kit would break the curb, not the other way around...lol

There are kevlar body kits and they're not very heavy at all.
Being bulletproof is one thing, being crash- and rock-resistant is another...
When you lay up a composite for strength it usually needs to be thick, but when you lay it up for shape and to be simply sturdy it doesn't have to be very thick at all. For example: Fiberglass diving boards weigh a ton but when it's laid up thinner and with lower "weight" cloth, like on body kits, bumpers, seats, etc, it can be strong and light. Ever lift a hunk of carbon? That stuff you burn in your barbacue grille is carbon (it comes in a bag that says "kingsford"). Carbon fiber is still made of carbon and is not "light" persay, but you can use a lot less of it because it's so strong (stronger than steel with 1/10th the weight is usually what the suppliers say).
