_PG_ - You are absolutely right. I forgot about Ryan Hampton. But the point I was making was that although Steph comes from a "straight line" racing background and has less drifting experience than the Forsbergs, Wans, Millens, Gittins, and Gushis of the drifting world does not mean he can never beat them. Drifting skills and technique can be honed and improved and will plateau at some point for the top drivers and those who are on the rise will catch up. For example, who would have thought that U.S.-based drivers such as Rhys Millen, Calvin Wan, Chris Forsberg, Alex Pfeiffer, JR Gittin and Sam Hubinette be able to hang with the best Japan has to offer in drifting? All this in 3 or so years. Maybe in the next year if two, we'll have our drivers kick top D1 Japanese driver butts in drift competition.

judges are the most hated people in drifting. No matter who you're judging for. A judge is never glorified or congradulated, and very rarely thanked. All of the FD judges have taken heat from a lot of different people at nearly every event. It's definately a job that everyone SAYS they can do, but very few can actually do it and make everyone happy.
This is coming from someone who judged car shows for a few years. And with car shows, you have 8 hours to come up with the winners, and the opportunity to review cars over and over again, not just a score sheet. And we still had complaints after every show. Imagine drifitng, where decisions on a 30 second run are made within a minute or two, with only 5 categories to judge on.
The ongoing joke we had was that if nobody complained, we musta really screwed up

It's a subjective motorsport, there are always going to be calls that people don't like. This type of thread is always going to exist on one site or another. Formula D went above and beyond by making their statement. They don't have to justify *Censored**Censored**Censored**Censored*, and they shouldn't have to.

well.. i just saw the video (and lame comments on ziptied, suprisingly nobody talking unwaranted crap about me yet for once) and honestly i can see how they gave steph the advantage. chris had more angle (and smoke, but since thats not judging criteria it doesnt really matter) but when chris was behind steph did pull away, and when chris followed he did not put the distance on steph that steph put on chris. IMHO i would have sent them again as it was a very very very close run (and huge props to steph for coming such a long way) and both drivers were on their game. however i am not a formula drift judge, nor will i claim to be one, nor will i say i could see the track from their perspective (which was also probably 100x better than the video i saw) but saying that chris got robbed bla bla bla is a stretch. highly debatable call maybe , but steph didnt grip like claimed earlier in this thread, and considering he was going against chris of all people i think he did extremely well, and i cant say that i can even imagine a way i can debate the runs enough to make a thread with claims of steph "gripping" and chris getting "robbed". chris had more angle, and steph had more speed. when chris lead id say he had a slight advantage on angle, with steph having better line, steph being able to stay on chris. however when steph lead, chris wasnt able to keep up.
but in summary i saw the video, and i can see how and why they advanced steph, although IMHO i think it was close enough for one more time, but again im NOT a FD judge and their perspective was probably a lot better than the video i saw. no big errors just steph's line and speed was a little higher, and although chris had more angle, following you are suppost to mimic the leader, from a judging perspective chris should have sacrificed some angle to get right on steph's door. but then again hindsight is 20/20, and i probably had the worst tandem runs all weekend when i totally n00bed it up and got kenji namayakowned. but still thats my $.02 . awesome runs by both drivers thoguh.Last edited by Mike Peters; 08-08-2005, 05:21 PM.

The sooner we see the camera from up in the booth the better. However, I'm pretty sure the only camera up there was FDTV, so chances are we aren't gonna see it until 9/4.

You cant make a decision off video like this. Its far from what the judges saw.
One thing I've noticed now that I had a chance to see a couple of the G4 episodes is that the camera views are not concistant with the judges view. You see different mistakes. I feel it may be better if G4 would use more of the shots they get from the judges stand rather then all the shots around the coarse. That way you see what the judges saw.
