Definitely cool that Rod is playing around at Irwindale. You have to think that after driving 1000hp Celicas and Tundras up Pikes Peak tossing a Mazda RX8 sideways on fairly level asphalt must be a piece of cake.

No, you are not mistaken. Rod Millen IS the record holder for the fastest time at pikes peak, using his 2.1-liter,AWD, tube chassis toyota celica in 1994, at 10 minutes and 4.06 seconds.

Rod "WILL NOT" debut in FD Finals, after talking to Kyle this afternoon at Thursdays FD Practice. We have found out the blown motor was not able to be replaced in time for the FD Fianls. You can see the car at the Mazda booth though for display. Look for the RX-8 and Rod Millen in 2006 Formula D season.

Wait, the car was just built, and the engine blew in it?

it is not uncommon for a new program to blow several engines before the debut at the track. Trying out different combinations and pushing the limits to maximize horsepower is often a trial-and-error process, and the wrong error can lead to a blown motor.

Hey, it's still a rotary and it is hard to extract horespower if you don't know exactly what you are doing. And rotaries can go bad and detonate a little easier than piston engines. I'm sure if it had an sr20 in it or something than it would be fine. But then again, I am not a fan of people who put non rotary engines into cars that were meant to have them. I think it would be cool if they threw a 20b in there. That way they would have the power without too many mods. But it is a really hard swap though.

Wow. I think I got a picture of that car while they were building it. When I was in the shop I didn't think anything of it. It was just a silver RX-8 with Traxion stickers on the side. I wasn't quite sure why they had it.

You can see it in the background.
