Reliable? my 92 240sx is very reliable. its got 180k on the clock and has only needed a fuel injector replaced.
New doesnt nessisarly equal reliable, and old doesnt nessisarly equal not reliable.
you can try a low millage 97/98 S14, thats pretty close to your year range.
You can try a mustang or a camaro from those years. you should be able to get one for your price range. Also you could look at the v6 models. If your not drag racing with it. There are two f body guys here who have already posted. who im sure you could ask advice for. they both seem very friendly.
i like the idea of the q45. It will be harder to drift with. but its deffenately do able. especialy with some choices mods. Plus they have that huge, relatively speaking, 4.5 liter v8, i doubt there much in the way of performance mods for it. but when you got serious a custom twin turbo system would freakin haul. plus i believe they share the same differential and hub pattern as the 240sx so 240 upgrades will probably work with some modification.
Also you would be in the situation later down the road to swap in a 300zx twin turbo motor. or a skyline motor. maybe with that 3 liter bottom end. Or i like i said. twin turbo kit. I really dont know whats out there. but it would be Different. Beasides you could strip it down and get its weight down abit.
but honestly even going that route your better off just to buy an older cheaper lighter infinity.

good luck. And you may have to come to the realization that there wont be a good drift car. that is also a big luxurious winter car.
